Spirited Life: Stoicism
Buddhism preaches nonattachment, but we also have our drives - passions, desires, yearnings, and quests. These passions are what makes us human, but they often get in the way of our goals. We can feel frustrated, angry, or alone, and the things we value get suppressed by the emotions we feel. Stoicism offers a solution, a key to leading a meaningful life. The answer is self-discipline - rational control of our inner world. This mastery is achieved through reason. But is this solution correct? Is being more rational the key to having more meaning? Is it true to who we are and where we want to be? To find our answers, we will need to understand not just the core ethical principles of Stoicism, but how the Stoics saw cosmos - the organizing principle of the universe.
