David Hume: A Treatise of Human Nature
Details
David Hume (1711 - 1776) is considered one of the most important English philosophers in modern philosophy and a major voice of empiricism, as well as a sharp critic of pure rationalism. A Treatise of Human Nature went against the grain of the Enlightenment, where in an age of reason he advocated for the power of feeling and emotion over logical thought and argument. Unlike the Cartesian model of pristine rationalism, Hume championed a common sense philosophy and proposed that we utilise our flawed beliefs and emotions as instruments to become better people. The talk will focus mostly on Hume's criticism of rationalism and Cartesian thought, as well as the schism between empiricism and rationalism.
In this event, the host will be giving a presentation of David Hume's philosophy with focus on his first work, A Treatise of Human Nature.
After a 30-minute presentation there will be a Q&A before we break up into smaller groups to continue the conversation.
We expect people to treat one another with respect and common courtesy. Buying drinks in the pub is also highly encouraged.
