Plato and Homer
Details
In this session we will read aloud and discuss Plato's dialogue Ion over the period of an hour.
Ion is a specialist in reciting aloud the works of Homer. Socrates wonders why he is so good? Is it divine inspiration?
No preparation or background knowledge required.
This is one of the shortest of Plato's dialogues and explores ideas of knowledge, art and inspiration.
In the discussion we will ask -can creative ideas come from outside us? Can dreams be creative? Does this happen in real life?
Gather 5.30. Reading from 5.45.
Refreshments will be provided.
This meeting is being followed at 7.30 by a talk given by award-winning Oxford Professor of literature Adam Smyth. All attendees at this meetup are able to attend this second talk free of charge if they wish.
