Birding Weekend Getaway: Sandhills Cranes & Southeastern AZ

This Meet Up event is to coordinate the planning of a weekend trip to see the Sandhill Cranes at Whitewater Draw and other birding locations in Southeastern Arizona. Travel and lodging will be on the individuals and as a group we will plan on places and activities to meet up at. Everyone is welcome to join all or whichever parts of the weekend they would like to participate in. People are also welcome to coordinate carpooling or joint lodging as they would like.

Itinerary:

Saturday Afternoon
Kartchner Caverns Cave Tour Options-
1:00 PM - 2:25 PM: Rotunda/Throne
*space is limited, this tour has most availability

Drive to Bisbee (55 mins)
Stop along the way for quick birding at San Pedro National Riparian Conservation Area (San Pedro House directly en route)

Saturday Evening
Dinner in Bisbee (links to ideas, we can decide closer to date and after people book lodging)
Overnight in Bisbee

Sunday Morning
Whitewater Draw
Twilight starts 5:45, sunrise at 7:10
AGFD states
The best times to view the cranes are when they leave for morning foraging which is just before sunrise and approximately one hour after. Additionally, you can view the cranes as they return from the morning foraging approximately 10 am – 12 pm.
Tailgate Breakfast- Make coffee/tea/breakfast on camp stoves in parking lot
Birding along the Whitewater Draw Trail while we wait for Sandhills to return from foraging
