Trauma Based Dissociation, Maladaptive Daydreaming & Paracosms: A Seminar
Details
A SEMINAR ON TRAUMA BASED DISSOCIATION, PARACOSMS & MALADAPTIVE DAYDREAMING
Join us tonight, October 30th, for a very important workshop on trauma based dissociation, paracosmic thoughts and maladaptive daydreams. The purpose and goals of this workshop is to explain dissociation from a trauma-focused perspective and examine the neurological factors that cause dissociative episodes. We will also discuss the role of childhood trauma and why survivors may not be able to remember certain parts of their early life due to dissociation.
Other topics discussed will include:
* Paracosms: Trauma can lead to the development of paracosms, which are elaborate, imaginary worlds, serving as a psychological defense mechanism to cope with emotional pain and stress by providing a space for self-care and processing difficult experiences. While paracosms can be a healthy way to express creativity and manage difficult circumstances, a traumatic or abusive environment can intensify their use as a way to escape harsh realities. We'll discuss famous paracosms that spawned out of this type of dissociation including Harry Potter & J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth.
* Maladaptive Daydreaming: As a coping mechanism to trauma, individuals may turn to daydreaming to escape from painful memories and emotions. Over time, this coping mechanism can become excessive and interfere with daily functioning.
* The Negative Consequences of Dissociation: Per The Seattle Anxiety Specialists maladaptive dissociation can have detrimental impacts on a person’s wellbeing and functionality if left untreated and misunderstood. It can severely impair peoples’ ability to effectively integrate their thoughts, memories and emotions with their experience of reality and perception of their identity. We'll discuss this from a complex PTSD perspective.
The course will conclude with therapeutic options that are available if dissociation, paracosmic thinking and maladaptive daydreaming is interfering with fully living your life.
YOUR ORGANIZER: Many of you know my story already, but I'm Kerrin and I've been engaged in paracosmic escapism for as long as I can remember. I believe this pattern of dissociation began as a result of trauma suffered at the hands of a malignant narcissistic mother. For years I tried to diagnose these very real fantasy worlds I'd created in my head (and often would write about in dozens of spiral notebooks hidden in my foyer dry sink growing up) and couldn't come up with what I was dealing with. I've been researching this issue for years and am very excited about offering this workshop for further discussion on this topic.
