Sedona Adventure Hike - Subway Cave via Boynton Canyon Trail 25-30s

Saturday, April the 4th

Albertson’s
3130 W Carefree Hwy
Phoenix, AZ 85086

6:45am

Join us for a classic Sedona adventure hike to Subway Cave, one of the area’s most unique sandstone formations. This hike offers beautiful red rock scenery, a fun destination, and a bit of adventure for those comfortable with moderate terrain.

We will meet at Albertson's in North Phoenix to grab supplies and organize carpools.

Timeliness will be necessary especially as this is a 3 day weekend for most families. If you arrive late, you will likely be unable to find parking at the trailhead and may miss the hike.

Difficulty: Moderate or 5.5 out of 10 (This hike is not hard at all, just a bit long)

Distance: Approximately 4.8 miles round trip

Elevation Gain: Approximately 600–700 feet

Terrain: Rocky sections, slickrock, and light scrambling near the cave

Subway Cave is a large, tunnel-like sandstone cave carved into the red rock cliffs above Boynton Canyon. The final approach requires route-finding and some minor scrambling, but the views from inside the cave and along the canyon make the effort worthwhile.

Fun fact: Despite its name, Subway Cave has nothing to do with trains or sandwiches. The nickname comes from the cave’s long, tunnel-like shape, which resembles an underground subway passage when viewed from inside.

What to Bring:
Plenty of water
Hiking shoes with good traction
Snacks or a light lunch
Sun protection

Post-Hike Plans
After the hike, a few of us will likely grab a bite to eat in Uptown Sedona before heading home.

Notes
As mentioned earlier, Sedona is typically very busy. This hike also falls on a 3-day holiday weekend when many families will be off, so crowds are expected. Please make every effort to arrive on time for carpooling so we can secure parking in Sedona.

This hike is best suited for hikers comfortable with uneven terrain and mild scrambling.

Dogs are not recommended due to crowds and terrain.

We're looking forward to another adventure! 🥳
