A Photography, Storytelling and Self-Publishing Workshop for Women
March 17-April 14, 2009

What is sacred to you? What are you grateful for?
Explore these and other important questions in a safe circle of women, and then transform your observations and feelings into form through photography and self-publishing.

Over the course of four sessions you will learn basic photography, editing and creative storytelling skills. You will learn how to use self-publishing technology to print a visual diary of the things that are most important to you.

Come together with other women to celebrate your journey through creative exploration and honouring!

Light refreshments will be served each week. You will need access to a camera and computer between classes, and it is helpful if you have basic computer skills, although it is not mandatory. Please bring a notebook to each session. All levels welcome.

First session begins March 17 from 6-9pm, there are four weekly sessions. Join us! $325 for all four sessions.

Wendy and I are responding to numerous requests to lead classes in developing personal photography as fine art - much like the courses we've led in full-time diploma programs at local schools. In the process, while working with the class to produce new work, we'll be looking at creativity, production standards, experimental approaches and the historical context of contemporary photography.

Our new classes will have some special features not offered by local schools:

    * Class sizes will be very small, 6-8 people, while remaining very affordable.
    * Classes will be held in our home and studio near 41st and Main with some field trips.
    * Classes start in October 2009.
    * We want to give as much personalized attention as we can to our students - that's where the juice is for us.
    * We want each class to become its own supportive community, to better enable each student to explore and extend their skills.
    * We will allow ample time for lectures, work review and exercises.
    * Film and digital photography will have equal support, so students can better appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of each medium.

To keep expenses down, we are relying entirely on word-of-mouth to spread the word on these classes, so please feel free to circulate this post to anyone you think might be interested - we truly appreciate it!

Please visit our website for lots more detail on these classes, or feel free to email us with any questions you may have. Here's a direct link to our workshops page:

Thanks again for your support!

Full Day Color Photography Workshop. Learn Tips and Secrets from a Pro

Saturday, August 29, 2009

Join us for a very informative and fun workshop to improve your vision and your photographs—get the most out of your digital camera and take more creative images.

This workshop is suited for all levels, from beginning amateurs to more advanced photographers. It includes informal discussions, slide presentations, demonstrations, and critiques of student work. A major part of the workshop is spent shooting on location. Students will have a lot of free time outdoors, using beautiful Vancouver as a subject to try new tips, ideas and techniques learned during the workshop. Models will be provided for the section photographing people.

Workshop will be led by Stuart Dee, a seasoned travel and people photographer with thousands of publication credits in magazine worldwide. (

Sharpening your Photographic Vision: For great photography, the most essential requirement is great vision. One may be familiar with photographic basics but want to have better creative control of the medium to achieve pre-visualized results more consistently. Participants will not only learn to see in new ways but also gain a solid foundation to support their vision and to encourage a more creative and intelligent approach to picture-making. Visual perception, colour theory, light and lighting, aesthetics, composition, metering, filters, digital camera controls, digital imaging, basic Photoshop controls and other topics may be discussed in relation to creating great travel images, including people, animals, nature, cities, landscapes, close-ups or architecture.

Travel and Stock Photography: Topics may include: preparing for travel, location shooting, equipment, photographing in foreign countries, model releases, covering a destination, shooting styles, how to shoot stock, bestsellers, copyright, how to sign on with an agency, getting your work published.

Workshop fee: $180 includes GST ($160 for early bird registration paid by August 18, 2009).
Maximum of 12 students.

Yay! I didn't know about this forum. I'm going to shamelessly advertise, and then I'm going to relieve my guilt by visiting the 3 websites advertised in the previous post here! biggrin

I do mostly portrait and sports photography, and I love night photography. I've always pulled more info out of dark/light areas using the tone curve for a RAW file, and JUST recently, I'm experimenting with multiple (bracket) exposures with fixed aperture to gather even more info... not NECESSARILY HDR, but I'm checking that too! tongue

So my website is Jonas Lee Photography! I hope the next poster checks it! :)

"Art-Sea" will be held on November 14, 2009 and the one and only Vancouver Aquarium. In addition to a fantastic venue, I have hand selected 30 artists who will show and sell over 250 pieces of unique artwork ranging in mediums from acrylic, oil, collage, to photography. Each artist will be present and more than happy to answer any questions or help you pick out that perfect piece just in time for the Christmas season. Further, we have organized a silent auction, walking art, music, hors d'oeuvres, and bar service. This should be one of the best art showcases in town and just to add that cherry on top, we are donating partial proceeds to a great organization; The ArtsUmbrella. This spectacular group of people helps offer arts programs to underpriviledged children in the lower mainland. How could you not feel good about attending or buying some art? Everyone wins.

So, if you aren't busy on November 14, grab a ticket from and make an appearance at "Art~Sea." The turtles, dolphins, seahorses, and sharks will surely appreciate it!

See you there!

Thank you for giving the opportunity to reply, and help build your resource base.

Since retiring I now have the time, and it is feels important to pass on some of the information that I have garnered over the years. This is my way of thanking those before, who took an extraordinary 50 years to teach me.

Thank you, as well, for suggestions for future activities and workshops in my profile build.

Always looking for exceptional examples of excellent photography, I've just came across an excellent, if small, web site where “blue dog HubPages” ... where Lynn Herrmann, Photography ... http://www.lynnherrma... shows off some of his excellent photographs; and instructs avid amateur and professional photographers. What I most enjoy about Herrmann's work, is how he has sets out, then focuses on his 'themes'. (click on a photograph to 'drill' down on that topic) ... http://www.lynnherrma...

One of my favourite posts (and links) is to “Star Flowers” ... , a neat, if discrete topic.
“Star Flowers - One of the enjoyable assignments in your photography lesson plans is photographing star shapes in flowers. From the smallest star to the largest, once you begin looking for them you’ll be surprised how abundant they are. As with other forms of photography, some basic rules of composition apply here as well. Balance, symmetry, rule of thirds, and controlled depth of field are some of the applications to consider while on this star flower mission.”

Although I'm not certain that you want further input, I will leave you with further links. As I've written previously, I love good photography and am passing this along as a 'thank you' to others who have helped teach me:

1.15 great macro photos from Shuttercraft Magazine (I'll never understand why they don't call this 'microscopic' or super-close-up) ... http://shuttermag.wor... ...
2.CleVR » Free and easy panoramic photo stitching software, panoramas and virtual tours ... ... - Sell your photographic stock , or another site. (I've chosen this because it is based in Calgary, Canada and was one of the first and best 'commissioned agent' to go online) ... http://www.istockphot... ...
4.iStockphoto Stock Photographer Training Manual ... http://www.istockphot... ...
5.Model and Entertainment Release (Canada) Form - LawDepot , albeit children will require parent/guardian permission; and there may be more specific forms (i.e.: (iStockphoto Model Release) ... http://www.lawdepot.c... ... http://www.istockphot... ...
6.Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. ... http://www.getpaint.n... ... It does allow for 'layering' – and other HDR like processes. ... http://www.getpaint.n... ...
7.Laurie McCanna's Complete List of Photoshop Tips
... http://www.mccannas.c... ...
8.Mihov Image Resizer ... [] THIS IS IMPORTANT, I THINK! It would be useful if the members learned how to 're-size' digital images (photographs). Even many of the photographs in 'Stuck In Customs' took an interminable time to come in. I feel sorry for those users still on dial-up when an author could have just taken an extra couple of minutes to resize, reduce the number of pixels and/or create 'thumbnails'. A free utility that I use all the time comes from Miha's Utilities. I use this so much that I also donate to Mihov. is a resource designed to help people find all kinds of photoblogs. If you're not sure what a photoblog is, check out the FAQ. “Our database currently holds listings for 37,531 photoblogs.” ... http://www.photoblogs... ...
10.pixlr, (free) Online image editor ... ...
11.Art Wolfe Photography ... “Travels On The Edge” One of my favourite photographers ... http://www.artwolfe.c... ... http://travelstotheed... ... Seattle/Tacoma KCTS, KCTS D2, and KCTS DT Sundays at 6 pm. Beginning 12/21 (North Vancouver – Shaw Channel 27) ...

Clubs and Organizations to consider:

1.Canadian Association for Photographic Arts (National) ... http://www.capacanada... ... (Pacific Region, or Zone at Lions Gate Camera Club) ... http://www.lionsgatec... ...
2.Canadian Geographic Photo Club (Free Membership) ... http://photoclub.cana... ...
3.Lions Gate Camera Club ... http://www.lionsgatec... ... - Meetings 7:30 pm every Thursday. Rooms 10, 11 Renfrew Park Community Centre, 2929 East 22nd Avenue (Renfrew and 22nd), Vancouver, BC. Come early. This also has to be the best deal in town - Initial meetings are free to attend to give you an opportunity to 'check it out' – then $40/year for about 40 meetings with 100s of enthusiastic amateurs, and professionals.
4.The North Shore Photographic Society (NSPS) ... [http://www.northshore...] - First three Mondays 7:30 pm, St Anthony’s Church basement hall, 2337 Inglewood Avenue, West Vancouver (1st Monday - Projected Images Evaluation - Evaluation and critique of members’ slides and digital images by a panel of judges. Sometimes controversial and always interesting; 2nd Monday - Print Evaluation - Evaluation and critique of members’ prints by an expert print maker. Lots of great information and discussion. 3rd Monday - Workshop Meeting - Formal presentations by subject matter experts. Usually educational and always entertaining. Fourth Wednesday 7:30 pm, The Silk Purse, 570 Argyle Avenue, West Vancouver (Digital Special Interest Group Discussions and presentations related to digital photography.) Come early. This also has to be the best deal in town - Initial meetings are free to attend to give you an opportunity to 'check it out' – then $40/year for about 40 meetings with 100s of enthusiastic amateurs, and professionals.
