4th of July Fireworks Photoshoot at Elysian Park

Happy Independence Day!

We'll be photographing the post-game fireworks after the Dodgers vs. Padres game from Elysian Park. The Elysian Park Helipad provides a unique elevated view overlooking Dodger Stadium and downtown Los Angeles, making it one of the best spots in the city for this type of shot.

This is a longer event than our typical photowalks. Expect a lot of waiting between arrival and fireworks, but we'll have time to scout compositions, set up tripods, and enjoy the evening view over the city. Fireworks begin shortly after the game ends (estimated around 9 PM).

I've shot from this location many times, but this is my first July 4 here, so we're all doing a bit of exploration together.

The example photo was taken with 24-70mm on a crop sensor body. So, a standard zoom lens should work well. Ultra-wide lenses may be too wide for the fireworks, while long telephotos may be too tight.

Parking
I am told the park rangers close the gate at sunset and you get a ticket if your car is still in the park, but I'm not sure if they'll enforce it if it's really crowded.
I've successfully parked on Academy Rd (free street parking) for many previous visits, but July 4 may be significantly busier than usual. I'll get there before 4pm to find parking. I'll post an update on the situation once I get there.

Tentative Plan
5:00 Arrive & find parking
5:15 Hike to photo location
5:45-8:45 Scout compositions, socialize, enjoy city views, set up equipment
9:00 Fireworks (approximate)
9:30 Head home

Attire & Things to Bring
We'll walk a bit (<2 miles). Closed toe shoes are recommended.
A sweater or a jacket. It can get chilly after dark
A tripod. It's a long exposure night photography.
Food and water. I'm not planning for a BBQ or anything.
A flashlight. You'll need it after sunset.
Sun protection. You'll need it until 7pm.
A lawn chair is a good idea, too.
