Balboa Park Equinox Sunset & Night Photography

A few days around the fall equinox, the setting sun lines up beautifully with the Cabrillo Bridge at Balboa Park. We're heading down to San Diego a few days before the equinox to photograph the sun hovering just above the end of the bridge.

The cover photo is one I took from this location two years ago. This time, let's see what we can capture together!

After sunset, we'll grab dinner at Panama 66. Those who want to stay longer can join me for some night photography around Balboa Park afterward.

Weather note: This shot depends on having a clear view of the setting sun near the western horizon. Even if the weather at Balboa Park looks good, clouds far out toward the coast can block the sun, so there’s no guarantee we’ll actually see the alignment. Either way, we’ll still explore Balboa Park, grab dinner, and do some night photography afterward.

This is a small-group outing.
I'm driving down from Lake Forest and can take up to 3 people with me if you need a ride.

Parking
Unfortunately, parking at Balboa Park isn't free this year. Parking is $2.50/hour until 6:00 PM, so depending on when you arrive, you may have to pay a little.

Where to Meet
I'm planning to head south early, probably around 3:00 PM. If you'd like to come early, we can explore Balboa Park together before the sunset shoot.

Keep in mind that there can be significant weekend traffic on southbound I-5, so please give yourself plenty of time if you're driving separately.

For the sunset shoot, we'll meet at the Plaza de Panama Fountain at 5:30 PM.
Meeting Location
Sunset is at approximately 6:49 PM, with the sun approaching the Cabrillo Bridge alignment around 6:30 PM.

Tentative Plan
5:30 PM — Meet at Plaza de Panama Fountain
5:45 PM — Walk to the shooting location & scout compositions
6:30 PM — Photograph the sun over the Cabrillo Bridge
6:49 PM — Sunset
7:00 PM — Dinner at Panama 66
8:00 PM — Night photography around Balboa Park, or head home

Attire & Things to Bring
A sweater or jacket — it can get chilly after dark.
A tripod if you're staying for night photography.
A longer lens for the sunset/bridge composition (100mm or longer).
A wide-angle lens can be useful for architecture and night photography.
Water is always a good idea.
