Providence PHP April Meetup

  • Apr 3, 2007 · 7:00 PM
  • Johnson & Wales Academic Center

We have a new location and a guest speaker for our April meetup. Nate Abele of the CakePHP project will be here to show off the web application framework and answer questions. We'll have time for discussion too.

The new location is a really nice conference room at the Johnson & Wales Academic Center, with everything that implies (i.e. a projector). It's in the building at the corner of Mathewson and Westminster streets downtown, across from the Hotel Providence. Parking is on the street, so if you're not familiar with the area or think you might run into trouble, email me. I'll give you my cell phone number, which you can call for suggestions.

Please RSVP, and we'll see you there. Until then, happy coding.

I found this event to be very informative. Being out the of industry for a couple of years, I felt I still I understood the material well though some of it was slightly confusing. But the attendees were friendly and helpful. The CakePHP framework looks to be a good one and I enjoyed the introduction to it. Enough to get me started on it!

This was my first attendance. I very much appreciated Nate Abele's presentation on CakePHP (a web application framework).

I've heard of "templating systems" and they sound like a lot of work without much gain, unless you are in a large, multi-programmer environment. I've played with the idea of maybe trying one in the next year. I have no familiarity with web application frameworks, but having seen the excellently-thought-out logic behind the CakePHP project, I am sure that if I decide to automate my production, I will jump whole-hog into this web application framework and forget about the idea of a templating system at all.

Nate did an excellent job at demonstrating how he used CakePHP to build a recent application for a client, walking us through some of the code, and showing us how easy it is to change functionality. He also pointed out some superior points of CakePHP over other WAPs (focusing on the most common needs instead of the doo-dads of the moment).

    Thanks, Nate!

I had a tough time finding parking and 20 minutes after driving around (not used to Down City area) I decided to not be rude and come in late.
