Paradigm Shift! by Sam Bellen
Access control is a part of all modern applications, protecting sensitive data and ensuring secure system interactions. This talk will explore various access control paradigms, including Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC), Policy-Based Access Control (PBAC), and Relationship-Based Access Control (ReBAC). Each approach has unique benefits and is suited to different scenarios, from cloud-native environments to dynamic, data-intensive applications.

We'll examine the core principles of these paradigms and discuss their advantages and limitations. You'll learn how RBAC simplifies management with predefined roles while ABAC offers detailed control based on attributes. We'll also explore PBAC's policy-driven flexibility and ReBAC's ability to handle complex relationships.

A key focus will be the emerging AuthZEN standard by the OpenID foundation, which provides a uniform API for interacting with various decision engines implementing different access control methods. This standard aims to simplify development, improve interoperability, and reduce the complexity of integrating multiple access control systems or migrating from one to another.
