    Scaling Writes on MySQL

DeskLodge Beacon Tower Bristol, Beacon Tower, Colston St, Bristol BS1 4XE, Bristol, GB

For October's meetup we have Graham Campbell who'll be giving his talk "Scaling Writes on MySQL".

We'll also be trying out a new venue (Desklodge at Beacon Tower).

We also have new sponsor Pinnaca. They supply a range of Retail Focused products to Extract, Transform & Load disparate data sources into a single database optimised for reporting within Microsoft Powerbi.

    Scaling Writes on MySQL
    - Graham Campbell

As your PHP application grows, database performance can become a bottleneck. While adding read replicas, copies of your database that handle read-only queries, can help with scaling reads, they don’t solve issues with too many writes.

That’s where write-sharding comes in. This technique distributes data across multiple databases, reducing both the write load and the amount of data on each node. In this talk, we’ll break down what write-sharding is, when to use it, and how to implement it effectively in a PHP application.

If you’re looking to scale beyond read replicas and handle high write loads, this session will give you the tools to do it, and how I implemented this at SMS Marketing SaaS Voxie, allowing them to service large new customers sending more in two hours than every other customer combined in a week!

Lamp Bristol and Pinnaca are kindly helping us host this evening. Thanks to them!
Your first time coming to PHPSW? Welcome!
Here's how the evening tends to run:

    • Feel free to turn up from 6:30pm.
    • We'll have a selection of soft drinks available from about 6:30pm, all free of charge thanks to our sponsors. It's a great chance to speak to people (we're a friendly bunch!) and do a bit of networking. Just speak to an organiser if you'd like an introduction to people, or just dive in and say "hello!".
    • At 7pm, we'll do a quick welcome talk and some community announcements
    • At ~7:05pm we'll start the talks
    • We finish at 8:30pm. We always go for a drink at Small Bar afterwards to discuss the talks and anything else that takes your fancy. 🐘
