We Who Wrestle With God – Chapter 3: Cain & Abel (Unity, Sacrifice, and the Root

Details
Description: Join us as we explore Chapter 3 of We Who Wrestle With God by Jordan B. Peterson, which examines the story of Cain and Abel through the lenses of unity, sacrifice, resentment, and personal responsibility. What does it mean to offer a worthy sacrifice? How does resentment arise when one feels rejected? And what lessons can we draw from these ancient archetypes about how to live meaningfully today? This session will be presented by Jason. It is open to all, whether you’ve been reading along or not—no prior attendance or chapter reading is required. Everyone is welcome. If you'd like to read ahead, Chapter 3 is our focus. Expect discussion on how this biblical narrative parallels other traditions and how its insights apply to our current cultural and personal landscapes. Some guiding questions to consider: What makes a sacrifice meaningful or insufficient? What causes Cain’s resentment to turn into violence? How might we recognize and transform these impulses in ourselves? Rather than offering simple answers, we will wrestle with Peterson’s ideas together. To explore what Peterson might mean by concepts like unity, sacrifice, elevation, and resentment—and to reflect on their modern applications—come join the discussion. If you’re new to the group, the book is available here: https://a.co/d/4jCV1gw
GENERAL INFORMATION: The first half hour of our meetup is for mingling, then 7:30pm-10pm consists of a formal presentation and discussion; the discussion section may divide into smaller groups if size necessitates. All are encouraged to contribute to the formal discussion, although you may decline if you wish. Afterwards, we enjoy further discussion with those who wish to stay longer and pursue pertinent topics in more depth, but people should feel free to leave whenever they want/need to. We have a potluck for everyone to partake of throughout the evening, so bring some food to share if you wish (this could be anything from a bag of chips to a homemade dish). Our fundamental principle is to encourage the free expression and exploration of ideas. Therefore, we will never silence controversial views that anyone may have about a topic. For the same reason, we do not tolerate direct personal attacks, which only impede genuine dialogue. DISCORD SERVER (updated link!): The group has a Discord server! This gives us all a space to talk about stuff between meetups. Use the following link to join, if you haven't already: https://discord.gg/FRab8G8j2V
