Mount Shavano & Tabeguache Peak — Late-Season Double (≈ 11 mi RT, 5,600 ft gain)

Overview:
Join us for one of the most rewarding doubles in the Sawatch Range — Mount Shavano (14,229 ft) and Tabeguache Peak (14,155 ft). This route from Blank Gulch Trailhead offers a steady climb through forest and tundra to two proud summits connected by a short, rugged ridge.

It’s a long but direct outing with big views of the Arkansas Valley and a great way to close out the 14er season before winter conditions settle in.

What to Expect:

Distance: ≈ 11 miles round trip

Elevation Gain: ≈ 5,600 ft

Difficulty: Class 2 — steep hiking with loose sections near the ridge

Time Estimate: 7–9 hours depending on group pace

Route: Ascend Shavano via Blank Gulch Trail → cross the ridge to Tabeguache → return over Shavano to descend

Weather: Cool mornings, windy ridges — expect frost or light snow patches

Sturdy boots or shoes with traction (microspikes recommended)

Trekking poles and gloves for cold rock sections

2–3 L water + high-calorie snacks/lunch

Warm layers, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen

Navigation tools (AllTrails or GPS track)

Meetup Options:
You’ve got two ways to join this adventure:

1️⃣ Dispersed Camping Option:
Camp near the Blank Gulch Trailhead the night before (Friday). There are dispersed and primitive spots available nearby for those who prefer an alpine start with minimal morning driving.

2️⃣ Early Commuter Option:
For those driving up from Colorado Springs, we’ll meet early Saturday morning to caravan/carpool to the trailhead. It’s about a 2.5-hour drive from COS.

We will all meet at the Blank Gulch Trailhead no later than 6:30 AM to start the hike.
