East Liberty Valley Historical Society Fall Lecture Series talk "Understanding Greenlawn, H. J. Heinz's East End Home" on Wednesday, October 8, 7 pm at Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Avenue, 15206
It is a given that H. J. Heinz's name is associated with food -- pickles, ketchup, beans, etc. -- but he was also a builder. As a boy, he worked in his father's Sharpsburg brickyard and together they used their own bricks as home builders. Decades later, as an established Pittsburgh millionaire, H. J. Heinz bought a Penn Avenue mansion and had it remodeled as his family's residence. Historian Frank Kurtik will tell the story of that home, "Greenlawn," its architectural features, how it was lived in and how it was a work in process, ever changing (just like the Heinz factory complex on the North Side) from the 1890s until Heinz's death in 1919.
The talk is free and no registration is required (just show up). But please consider supporting the activities of the Historical Society with a tax deductible donation!
