SKETCHING TOGETHER APRIL 2026
SKETCHING TOGETHER APRIL 2026
Richard Olcott of Ennead Architects is the designer of the Anderson Collection at Stanford University; he and partner Timothy Hartung, with whom he recently completed Stanford’s Bing Concert Hall, lead the Ennead team. The design for the Anderson Collection locates exhibition spaces on the second floor below an undulating ceiling. The gentle slope of the ceiling and the continuous translucent clerestory at the perimeter of the building bring diffused natural light into the galleries from above. A grand central staircase extends the gallery walls, allowing visitors to view art as they gradually ascend from the lobby to the main galleries above. Openings between the gallery walls provide views into the double height stair hall, which serves as a point of orientation for visitors circulating throughout the building. A primary goal of the design has been to translate and interpret the unique accessibility to the art as it has been exhibited throughout the Anderson’s home and offices and foster a similar powerfully direct and intimate experience. The gallery layout is conceived as one open room, freeing visitors from a prescribed sequence and promoting the exploration of individual interests. The second floor gallery volume cantilevers over the first floor to create a modern interpretation of Stanford’s traditional pedestrian arcade, extending along the south side of the building towards an intended contemporary sculpture garden. The building program is positioned to activate the pedestrian walkway; large windows offer views into the library, gallery and academic spaces that fulfill the educational mission of the Anderson program to become a vital library and teaching space in addition to a gallery. Internationally-acclaimed for powerful and sustainable building designs for cultural, educational, scientific and governmental institutions, Ennead Architects (formerly Polshek Partnership) has been a leader in the design world for decades.
Saturday Morning Community Garden Work Party
Saturday Morning Community Garden Work Party
Every Saturday morning, from 9am – 12pm, a group of 2-15 community volunteers comes to work on the gardens. Most of the volunteers are queer or trans, though there are several straight volunteers as well, and we’ve had volunteers ranging in age from 6 to 70. Any given Saturday, we might be building an arbor, planting native trees, rebuilding community garden beds, painting a mural, pruning trees, chopping wood, building benches, sweeping sidewalks, harvesting grapes, or planting seeds. Here is a video of one of our planting days, from March 13, 2021. [https://youtu.be/HY4wVqnwvHQ](https://youtu.be/HY4wVqnwvHQ)

Mark Monsarrat Memorial Plein Air
Mark Monsarrat Memorial Plein Air
This special event is to honor long-time POPS member Mark Monsarrat who passed away on January 26 after bravely battling glioblastoma. Mark was one of the original members of POPS and he inspired many of us. His passing is much too soon. It is a tragic loss to the art world and everyone who knew him. We are unaware of anything being planned for Mark in the Bay Area, although funeral services will be in Columbus, Ohio later this month. One of his many Bay Area friends suggested a simple paint-out which is something that Mark would have liked. So please paint as usual, and when we gather for lunch we will share our stories about him. *You are welcome to spread the word across Mark's eco-system.* **Mark's obituary - published on March 6** https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/dispatch/name/mark-monsarrat-obituary?id=60957843 [Mark's paintings](https://markmonsarrat.com/works) Baylands offers a range of painting subjects including a duck pond and beautiful views across the tidal marshlands to the Eastern and Western hills. Many shorebirds. It is an important stopping place on the Pacific Flyway for migrating birds. **Parking** At the duck pond there is a small parking lot where you can park and paint. Alternatively, drive past the duck pond to the large parking lot for Bay views across tidal marshlands to the east and west that are very popular with birds. **Restrooms** Porta-potties at the duck pond parking lot and another is a 3 minute walk on a sandy trail from the south end of the large parking lot **Lunch and Mark's Memorial at 12:30** Meet at the picnic tables with your paintings at the far end of the large parking lot.

Modern Art for the Technology Workers - Discover the missing part of yourself
Writing code or designing electronic circuits is an art in itself, but how familiar are you with art in a common sense, the painting art? Connecting to this cultural tradition has a practical benefit as well: you can engage in more sophisticated conversations at venture capitalists' parties, looking for investors for your high-tech startup. Mila Ilyina, an author of numerous articles on the anthropology of art and the psychology of creativity, is going to present at Hacker’s Dojo. Mila has taught art history at F1.BayArea Photo Artllab and regularly gives lectures as part of the Russian-language program at the Jewish Community Center of Silicon Valley. Her lectures—previously held at Stanford University and popular among art lovers of all backgrounds—combine intellectual insight with heartfelt storytelling. **Mila delivers lectures in Russian, but we will provide synchronous interpretation.** Suggested donation is $45, please use PayPal asilin@google.com The money will be used to support Russian-language programs of JCC Los Gatos, Museum of Russian Culture in San Francisco and open-source coworking space Hacker Dojo.
