Let’s Try Sketching Together — Anderson Collection at Stanford
I’d love to invite you to a **very relaxed and creative evening** — sketching in the museum galleries.
I won’t be attending myself, but if you’re in the mood to draw- this could be a lovely option!
Every **2nd and 4th Friday**, Anderson Collection hosts a **free drop-in sketching session** open to all skill levels. You don’t need any experience at all — just curiosity and willingness to try. We’ll be sketching right in the galleries, enjoying the collection from a creative, playful perspective.
All materials are provided (pencils, paper, even stools), the program is loosely supervised, and we’ll meet in the museum lobby. All ages are welcome.
**Important note:** If you’ve ever thought “I can’t draw” — this is probably for you.
Let’s do something different together, slow down, observe, and see what comes out — no pressure, no judgment, just exploration.
I’d love for you to join ✨
Zazen (sitting meditation)
### The Practice of Zazen (sitting meditation)
You may select either a chair or a zafu (cushion) on which to sit. At your seat, bow in *gassho* towards the zafu and then turn clockwise and bow in *gassho* towards the opposite side of the hall.
**The Bell is Rung**
* three times when *zazen* begins
* twice when *kinhin* (walking meditation) begins
* once when *kinhin* is finished
* once when *zazen* is finished.
### Sitting meditation
* **Sit on the front** part of the chair or cushion.
* **Arrange your legs** in a position you can maintain comfortably.
* **In the full-lotus position**, first place your right foot on your left thigh, then your left foot on your right thigh. You may also sit simply with your legs tucked in close to your body, but be sure that your weight is distributed on three points: both of your knees on the ground and your buttocks on the round cushion.
**In the half-lotus position**, place your left foot on your right thigh.
* **Another option is the *seiza* position**, which is like kneeling, except you are sitting on the front edge of the zafu.
* **On a chair**, keep your knees apart about the width of your shoulders, feet firmly planted on the floor.
* **Straighten and extend your spine**, keeping it naturally upright, centering your balance in the lower abdomen. Push your lower back a little forward, open your chest, and tuck your chin in slightly, keeping the head upright, not leaning forward or backward, or to the side. Sway your body gently from left to right, until you naturally come to a point of stillness on your cushion.
* **Keep your eyes slightly open.** Cast them downward at about a 45 degree angle. Without focusing on any particular thing, let everything have its place in your field of vision. If your eyes are closed, you will easily drift into drowsiness or daydream.
* **Keep your lips and teeth together** with your tongue resting against the roof of your mouth.
* **Place your hands on your lap** with the right palm up and your left hand (palm up) resting on your right hand, thumb tips lightly touching, forming a horizontal oval.
* This is the mudra of zazen, in which all things are unified. Place the sides of the little fingers against your abdomen, a few inches below the navel, harmonizing your center of gravity with the mudra.
* **Take a few deep breaths**, exhaling fully. Let your breath settle into its natural rhythm. With proper physical posture, your breathing will flow naturally into your lower abdomen.
* **Sitting still**, keep your attention on your breath. When your attention wanders, bring it back to the breath again and again- as many times as necessary.
* **Be fully, vitally present**. Simply do your very best. At the end of your sitting period, gently sway your body from right to left. Stretch out your legs; be sure they have feeling before standing.
Brunch Ethics at Jack's: Silicon Valley Pain Index and Collaboration
The Human Rights Institute at San Jose State University publishes the Silicon Valley Pain Index annually. The 2025 report is here: a[SVPI](https://www.sjsu.edu/hri/policy-projects/svpi/index.php)
One of the purposes of the SVPI is to "Spark collaborations between scholars, students, stakeholders, communities, and policymakers to address inequality and achieve greater human rights practice."
What does that mean to us in Ethical Culture? Are we one of the communities collaborating with others? How and toward what end?
From SVPI "San José is the #1 most expensive large city in the nation to live in, with average monthly expenses at $3,504." What does that mean to each of us? Do we ignore the inequality?
Founder of Ethical Culture Felix Adler advised people to look around, to see what the issues were locally, and to act. Thus, EC people were part of the founding of NAACP, ACLU, Visiting Nurses Assn. People in EC worked to change NYC building codes (a bedroom must have a window), and founded a settlement house for immigrants.
What does SVPI tell us about the issues in our area? What should we be doing? How should we collaborate?
Let's talk.
Join us on the patio a bit before 10:30 to be settled when the meeting starts. Look for the Ethical Culture sign at the table. We set out chairs for everyone so RSVP. Dress according to the weather! They have heaters, but we will be outside! Please arrive on time.
If you have symptoms of illness, please come to a meeting when you are well.
We are meeting at a restaurant and using their facilities. Please be prepared to order food.
Join us! Invite others! Bring your unique point of view and add to the
discussion.
See you there!
No classes until further notice
I apologize there won’t be a salsa class until further notice thank you.

Our meetings start with an icebreaker question and a chance for each person to introduce themselves. We then move to rating the book with a thumbs up/down/sideways. We spend most of the meeting discussing the book, including strong opinions, questioning why the author made the choices they did, personal reactions to the story and characters, and wondering how it could have been improved.
You don't need to finish reading the whole book to come to the meeting! However, if you haven't finished the book, please be OK with hearing spoilers.
To find us, look for the group with the book of the month displayed on the table.
**Dues Announcement**
Starting in January 2026, we will start collecting dues at each meeting to cover costs such as Meetup/Bookclubs(dot)com fees and paying for special meeting locations. Donations can be made with cash (preferred) or through a Ko-Fi link. Suggested donation is $2 per person per meeting but never required. We happily accept more $ in dues in order to cover costs for those who cannot contribute. Our goal is to keep the club accessible to all.
Human Revolution- Process of Self Improvement - Introductory Meeting
• What we'll do
There are all sorts of revolutions—political, economic, industrial, scientific, artistic and those in distribution and communications. And there are many others. Each has its significance and, often, necessity.
But no matter what one changes, the world will never get any better as long as the people—the guiding force and impetus behind all endeavors—remain selfish and lack compassion. In that respect, human revolution is the most fundamental of all revolutions and, at the same time, the most necessary. ( Discussions on Youth, second edition, p. 256)
“Human revolution is a never-ending process of continual self-improvement. It describes a Buddhist way of life that eternally seeks growth and personal development. It is about how much we are growing and improving right now rather than what we have achieved in the past.”
• What to bring
Seeking Spirit and questions!
• Important to know
Soka Gakkai International-USA (SGI-USA) is the most diverse Buddhist community in the United States with more than 500 chapters and some 100 centers throughout the country. SGI-USA is part of the larger SGI network, which comprises more than 12 million people in 192 countries and territories around the world. SGI members base their practice on the Lotus Sutra and Nichiren Buddhism, which teaches that each person has within the courage, wisdom and compassion to face and surmount any of life’s cha

**Description of the Book**
As a child, Kathy – now thirty-one years old – lived at Hailsham, a private school in the scenic English countryside where the children were sheltered from the outside world, brought up to believe that they were special and that their well-being was crucial not only for themselves but for the society they would eventually enter. Kathy had long ago put this idyllic past behind her, but when two of her Hailsham friends come back into her life, she stops resisting the pull of memory.
And so, as her friendship with Ruth is rekindled, and as the feelings that long ago fueled her adolescent crush on Tommy begin to deepen into love, Kathy recalls their years at Hailsham. She describes happy scenes of boys and girls growing up together, unperturbed – even comforted – by their isolation. But she describes other scenes as well: of discord and misunderstanding that hint at a dark secret behind Hailsham's nurturing facade. With the dawning clarity of hindsight, the three friends are compelled to face the truth about their childhood – and about their lives now.
