Hike to the Tallest point in Texas
Details
Update: I look forward to this weekend roadtrip getaway, although the Government Shutdown has affected our Sunday Carlsbad Cavern tour plan, we will persevere and make the weekend a Milestone. The weather forecast appears to be dry and very cool, so a windbreaker will probably come in handy for those who are sensitive to the chills. See yall in a couple days.
This will be a Moderate to Hard trek, around a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10, but will capture some motivational moments while hiking to the Guadalupe Peak Summit, for some Epic views, a priceless photo with a US Dept of Interior Post Office marker, along with some team building motivational talks while hiking an elevation of roughly 3,000 feet, 4 miles up and 4 miles back down.
Hiking Checklist:
- Hiking Boots with Ankle Support
- Sweat Towel or Bandana
- Sombrero or Bucket Hat, Ball Cap
- 1 Gallon - 128 ounces of Water carry in a combination of ways, Canteens, Camelback, Tetra-Pak CocoWater
- Mental Preparedness
The day prior, being Friday, October 31, Halloween, I plan on staying at the Holiday Inn in Van Horn, Texas, for some adequate rest, then drive 1 hour North to the Guadalupe Peak trailhead, departing around 6:30 am.
Following the hike, a potential dinner spot would be a few mins West to the Town of Cornudas, where they have weekend BBQ and Live Music, afterwards, backtracking and driving a few miles North East to Carlsbad, New Mexico for the Evening, staying at the Holiday Inn in town.
Sunday morning would entail a tour of the iconic Carlsbad Caverns, from around 9 to 12, and then departing back to Dallas after lunch, maybe enjoying a Green Chile dish.
From talking with several hikers that have accomplished this trek, they stated bring at least 1 gallon of water per person, and that the Last Mile going up is the most difficult. To me that's perfect, the last stretch should be the toughest, you get that sense of accomplishment for pushing your mind through tough obstacles.
Also, this trail is inside a National Park that may require an Entrance Fee.
As the event date approaches, I will give my phone number to the attendees for better coordination of meetup times, travel plans, etc...
On Friday, while traveling, I have ran across a Barn Door steakhouse in Odessa Texas that I will be stopping at for Dinner on Friday the 31st, for a Nice Ribeye and a Loaded Baked Potato, skin and all.
I will also be available for any roadside assistance that may be needed, or even the possibility of carpooling, but that can be finalized when the depature gets near.
Looking forward to this Epic Trek and camaraderie.
