Join us for a tongue-tingling journey through the history of spices, herbs, and the powerful punch they’ve packed into global history, local identity, and Friday night takeaways.

We’ll explore what makes a spice a spice (versus a herb), how we’ve used them in cooking across cultures, and how these potent plants fueled empires, trade wars, and culinary revolutions. From the ancient spice routes to modern kitchens, we’ll trace their path.

Expect a deep dive into Ireland’s spicy past: when did cinnamon first hit Irish shores? What was the first Indian restaurant to open here—and how did it change what we eat? And of course, we’ll pay proper homage to the mighty Dublin spice bag—part mystery, part masterpiece, all cultural icon.

This event includes both a talk and a plant swap, lasting approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
There is a €10 charge which helps cover the cost of running the event, including Meetup fees, setup, and ingredients for the spice samples.
We’re kindly being hosted by Street 66 on Parliament Street, who are providing us with the space free of charge. In return, we ask all attendees to purchase a drink—be it a tea, coffee, or something stronger—to support the venue.
