Platform Engineering New York: Data, Resilience, and More

Details

Join us for our second Platform Engineering New York (PENY) meetup! PENY is an open and inclusive meetup group, organized by volunteer members of the community, for the community. We welcome all to join and attend these meetups - whether practicing, adjacent to, or interested in platform engineering.

Agenda

6:00pm - 6:45pm: Social time. Food and drinks.
6:45pm - 7:00pm: Sponsor Talk (Axiom)
7:00pm - 7:30pm: Don't Re-org Away Your Resilience (Dan Slimmon)
7:30pm - 8:00pm: Building a Problem Detection Platform Based on 20 Years of Hard Fought Incidents (Lyndon Brown)

Sponsors

Meetups aren't free. Thank you to our sponsors for providing a platform (pun intended) to make this meetup a reality!

GrubHub

Thank you GrubHub for sponsoring the venue for this meetup!

Axiom

Join us to explore Axiom, the all-in-one event data system. Learn about Axiom Flow, which routes, shapes, filters, and forks events to various destinations, all while storing data immediately in an affordable data store. Discover how this innovative solution ensures querying 100% of your data, eliminating the need for complex edge searches.

Talk #1: Don't Re-org Away Your Resilience (Dan Slimmon)

Platform Engineering teams are often formed by repurposing an infrastructure team, or an ops team, or an SRE team. This makes a certain kind of sense, since these teams' responsibilities tend to overlap. But there is a critical mismatch in responsibilities that's easy to miss: somebody's still gotta own the diffuse bugs.

Diffuse bugs are bugs that show up not as defects in a particular software system, but only as anomalies in the interactions among those systems, their operators, and customer traffic. Since their symptoms are spread across multiple ownership domains, diffuse bugs can only be identified (much less understood) by somebody who is looking for them. This talk will explore the importance of diffuse bug ownership to resilience. We'll conclude with some practical methods of ensuring that diffuse bugs don't fall through the cracks in your org chart.

Speaker Bio

Dan Slimmon is an SRE with 16 years of experience at scale (recently: HashiCorp, Etsy). He's run hundreds of software incidents and his 3-part video course, Leading Incidents, was recently released on June 12.

Talk #2: Building a Problem Detection Platform Based on 20 Years of Hard Fought Incidents (Lyndon Brown)

In platform engineering, performance and reliability problems arise from every direction — issues in open-source dependencies, bugs introduced by your engineers, or the unexpected behavior of these components under load. Unfortunately, application monitoring is reactive today: measure noisy symptoms, manually sift through data, rinse and repeat.

Frustrated by this hamster wheel, we looked for a better way and drew novel inspiration from our cyber security background. If threats and vulnerabilities are detected deterministically, why can’t we do this for reliability problems?

In this talk, I will share lessons learned from 100s of incidents and the design principles behind Prequel, the first real-time problem detection platform. Join me and learn how detection engineering can help you ship and scale faster by cutting to the chase.

Speaker Bio

Lyndon Brown has 20 years experience shipping infrastructure products, notably at Endgame (acquired by Elastic) and Mandiant (acquired by Google). He is a founding member of the open problem detection community, Detect.sh, and co-founder of Prequel.dev.

Registration

Space is limited so we are requiring registration for this event. We will only be able to check in registered attendees whose first and last name match their identification. We cannot accommodate guests that are not registered attendees. Please do not hesitate to RSVP, but if your plans change we would appreciate it if you return to update your attendance status.

Accessibility

This venue is wheelchair accessible.
