2nd Reading! - Shakespeare's Underrated Two Gentlemen of Verona

Details

Why I like this play (see below).
Come read Shakespeare's Two Gents. (I'm sorry I've been too busy to put up a weekend read, but until I can do that, here is a one night read of one of Will's shortest plays.)
Once upon a time I swore we would never do this play, so offended I was by a bit of it. How have I come to regard it with esteem, as a work of art?
The Oxford Scholar Emma Smith says that we might think of Two Gentlemen of Verona not as one of Shakespeare's "immature plays", but as his play about immaturity. The two young men in the play are away from home for the first time, and instantly behaving rather badly. One is engaged in the usual stuff of Shakespeare lovers, falling for someone against the will of her parent. But the other "Gentleman" turns out to be No kind of Gentleman al all.
In counterpoint to the two aristocrats is the working class servant Lance, who has a much more utilitarian view of love and what makes a suitable match. Shakespeare weaves back and forth between scenes of the youth with their romantic notions, and of Lance and his work-a-day wisdom. But if Lance (the servant) is their counter-point, the one who's behavior is actually most like our anti-hero Gentleman is Lance's dog Crab. Neither Crab nor this wayward youth can be trusted in society.
Lance the servant is one of Shakespeare's funniest comic characters, and his ruminations on his dog describe in comic fashion the actions of our man. I feel I've met both this dog and this man at one time or another!
There's still no forgiving some of the gender politics at the end, and that's probably why it's seldom performed. But I hope you will come and read Two Gentlemen of Verona.
No experience necessary. Everyone reads. If you are on the east coast, and let me know, I can cast you in earlier acts. Screen share our script or bring your own.
PLEASE TAKE YOURSELF OFF if you find you can't come so I can fill the spot (let me know asap).
See you there!
WooHoo!
