Foundations of Watercolor: Values & Color
The Nuts & Bolts of Watercolor — A structured 11-week course in visual foundations, from values to confident color use.
Watercolor is often misunderstood as a spontaneous or accidental medium. In reality, strong watercolor painting is built on structure, clarity of values, and informed color choices.
This 11-week course offers a progressive, carefully sequenced introduction to watercolor foundations. The first session focuses on Values (4 weeks): learning how light and dark organize a painting, using value scales, limited palettes, and compositional studies. The second session focuses on Color (7 weeks): exploring color theory, light, pigment properties, complementary and limited palettes, and practical color-selection strategies.
Each class combines:
short lectures with visual references
historical context (from classical to modern masters)
guided painting exercises
structured experimentation
This course is suitable for:
beginners who want a strong foundation
intermediate painters seeking clarity and control
artists who wish to understand why color works, not just how to use it
Students may join the full series for the most cohesive learning experience.
A limited trial option is available for those wishing to experience the teaching approach before committing.
