Seattle Area Van Camping: Dungeness Recreation Area (Sequim, WA)

Details

Our events have been going great, our only challenge has been finding places that aren't booked already during this busy season. Eventually we'll plan ahead more. One of our knowledgeable van lifers told us about this site which is a county site and not as well known and thus has several sites available for these dates.

You don't have to have a van to attend, bring your car/SUV or tent. Also, feel free to just stay one night, etc.

About the campground From ChatGPT (I'm short on time!):
Dungeness Recreation Area, located northwest of Sequim, Washington, is a 216-acre Clallam County park offering a diverse natural landscape of forests, meadows, wetlands, and coastal bluffs. It serves as the gateway to the Dungeness Spit, the longest natural sand spit in the United States, which extends into the Strait of Juan de Fuca and home to the New Dungeness Lighthouse (a 5-mile hike each way).
Visitors can enjoy a variety of recreational activities, including hiking along a scenic one-mile bluff trail with panoramic views, exploring several miles of multi-use trails suitable for biking and horseback riding, and picnicking at numerous sites equipped with tables and fire pits.
Adjacent to the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge, the area is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, offering opportunities to observe a wide array of bird species and other wildlife in their natural habitats . With its rich biodiversity and range of outdoor activities, Dungeness Recreation Area provides a serene and engaging experience for all visitors.

A few notes:

  • This is Father's Day weekend on Sunday. We normally wrap up early on Sunday so hopefully you can head out as needed.
  • Dogs are allowed in the campground but not on all the hikes, notably the sand spit that leads to the lighthouse.
  • The campsites don't have electricity or water.
  • We've heard that the gates close at 9 p.m. so make sure you arrive before then and possibly there's no in-n-out privileges after then? (Mary will check)
  • A reviewer has said that there's plane noise from a nearby airport, you may want to bring earplugs etc. to sleep with
  • Depending on where you're coming from, you may need to take a ferry, so plan on that
