About Poesy
Poesy held it's first poetry workshop in February 2025. It started when I noticed that though I worked and played with various types of writing and with various types of writers, that I had no one to discuss poetry with. So began my venture to find others that enjoyed a unique form of communication and expression through poetry.
This group is excellent for new or experienced poets who are open to diverse approaches and thoughts about poetry and love to dig deep into one.
All poets get an opportunity to read their work to an audience and to give and receive feedback workshop poems.
Warning: This group requires a more active level of participation than many Meetup groups. Most new members are not be prepared for this. We collaborate both through our Discord server and during regular Zoom workshops. The Discord space is used to communicate updates and reminders about workshop activity. It is essential that you be comfortable using this platform to participate in our workshops.
We also use Discord to share ideas, events and ongoing discussions around poetry. It's designed this way to foster an engaged group of poets that are interested in being part of shaping an amazing community of poets.
What to Expect
- Workshops are 2 hours long
- Hosted online via Zoom
- Workshop communications conducted on Discord
- No more than 8 poets per session
- Each participant has 15 minutes to read their poem aloud and receive feedback from the group. Longer poems may need to be excerpted or broken into parts.
- When RSVPing, you'll be asked to send your poem to the organizer in advance via Meetup direct message.
Optional: Share Your Poetic Roots
If you’d like, tell me a bit about your favorite poet or poem—and why it speaks to you. For example, my favorite poet is Langston Hughes. He was the first poet who ever held my attention back in high school, and he's stayed with me since, even as my tastes have evolved. When I use rhythm or repetition in my own work, I feel his influence. I also admire how deeply present he is in his poetry—his voice is never lost. Many poets achieve this, but I return to him for a reason that’s partly poetic and partly personal.
I look forward to being introduced to the poets and poems that have shaped you.
Participation & Commitment
Participation is key. Members who are inactive or don’t meet the workshop expectations may be removed. That said, there’s no pressure to stay long-term, drop in as long as it supports your writing journey and if you leave, you can rejoin at a later time when you can be an active and contributing member.
