Extradition, Resistance, and the Future of Hong Kong

Details

Recent (ongoing) events in Hong Kong relating to the extradition law, protests, police action, and ongoing political fallout continues to make headlines around the world. Many feel this is just the opening act of a much longer drama yet to unfold. Certainly a lot of ink has been spilled on reporting, analysis, and even rumours of the intentions and actions of different players. Emotions still run high and clarity still lacking.

With the first of July approaching and another mass protest expected, the issues that have begun as a protest over extradition, but have now morphed beyond that, is far from over.

So what exactly happened and how did it lead to this point? What is next in this ongoing saga? Will the government try to push the law again? Or is this administration a lame duck? Was this a spontaneous protest against the law, a boiling over of frustrations over Hong Kong's situation since the handover, or foreign interference? Was the actions of the police, including the use of the anti-riot force and arrests at universities & hospitals justified? What will be the long term impact on Hong Kong, its society, economy, and governance? What does this mean for all of us living in this city?

This event will be an honest and open discussion of all these things and more. We will try to give space for all points of views and opinions, as long as they are grounded on facts. We have invited guests to share their thoughts on this topic, including author Even Fowler who is director at HKFP, and writer for the SCMP as well as other notable publications around the world.

The format of this event will be slightly different than our usual ones, and we will encourage more open discussions in the first half (rather than just focusing on one speaker), in the spirit of civic debate. It will be moderated to ensure everyone who wants to make a point has the chance to do so.

I look forward to seeing you all there.
