The debate for this meeting will be about America's Progressive Tax system. There seem to be constant debates about the taxation system, some believing that it's too much against those who have and some believing it does not go far enough. Here is the outline of of the most persuasive arguments I've heard.
For (Want there to be an increased tax on the rich)
*Ethics
- The people are the ones producing the super majority of the production thereby profit of a business. Those who work on the factory floor deserve most of the benefits. Taxation is an effective means to ensure they get a fair benefit for their labor. By increasing the quality of their schools, infrastructure, utilities, healthcare and so forth.
- The wealthy use more resources than anyone else by far and benefit the most from public programs. We would think of freight trucks on roads, natural resources like water, environmental clean-up, utilities, postal services, socialized losses, great schooling and government programs. Why shouldn't the wealthy pay more to maintain the public resources that allow them to be so successful in the first place
- *Pragmatic Arguments
- This system is necessary for us to fund the investments and programs necessary to maintain a thriving American ecosystem
- This system is necessary to make nonproductive cash, productive
- This system mitigates the ability of an overpowered oligarchy in the states thereby allowing a well-functioning democracy
- Against (Want there to be no increased tax on the rich)
- Ethics
- There is a moral question of taking people's resources without their consent which is essentially taxation. Even if the mandate comes from the means of the democratic process. Since that democratic process does not have as its majority those who you will compel their resources it is tyranny from the majority to take from the minority.
- There is also a fairness question of penalizing those who are making personal self-sacrifices. Going to school, working longer hours, taking an exorbitant risk, investing vs. making entertainment expenditures etc...to level the playing field. However some players have stayed at the gym longer or practiced longer should it be the case that they should be handicapped for doing so in the game?
- Pragmatic Arguments
- We are not isolated we have 50 competing states and 195 countries all vying for capital the ones that make it attractive i.e. having the lowest tax rates will get that capital hurting the states.
- This would hurt business have downstream impacts of having lower opportunities for employment, lower purchasing power for equipment, lower competitive advantage against international companies.
- There you have it! Let's say you? Are you for or against the proposition that Uncle Sam should go after the rich? Hope to see all your intelligent faces in the next meetup as always be passionate, be opinionated, be argumentative but always be respectful of your fellow brothers and sister Americans. Also please give me the grace to moderate the discussion. See you soon!
