Going Functional!

Details

'Functional' is one programming paradigm that has been receiving a lot of oxygen in the recent past. What makes the functional paradigm so different from the imperative paradigm? Why is functional programming 'hot' today? Let's explore these themes in our next Meetup on 17th September!

Here's the agenda:

  1. Functional programming - Past,Present & Future (2:00 PM - 3:00 PM)

Speaker:Pushkar Kulkarni

An exploration of popular functional languages – their hallmark and state-of-the-art features and where the functional paradigm, as a whole, is poised to go. We also intend to do some live-coding in purely functional languages to elucidate certain characteristics of functional languages.

  1. Lightning talk: An introduction to the OCaml language, and its functional aspects (3:00 PM - 3:15 PM)

Speaker: Dinakar Guniguntala

Break (3:15 PM - 3:30 PM)

  1. The R Programming Language: An Informal Introduction (3:30 PM - 4:15 PM)

Speaker: Dr. Ramana Polavarapu

In this talk, we intend to present the basics of the R programming language. Then, we explore the functional programming aspects of the language. We also discuss why R has become the lingua franca of data science. We conclude with a comparison between Python and R when it comes to solving the problems of data science.

  1. Lightning talk: Going Swiftly Functional (4:15 PM - 4:30 PM)

Speaker: Pushkar Kulkarni

This session will provide an appreciation of how Swift supports functional programming.
