Introduction to Eclipse SDK

Eclipse is a powerful open source IDE that accelerates developer productivity and is used by millions of developers today. While care has been taken to make all the capabilities to be intuitive, hundreds of features and options that enable and optimise enterprise-grade Java development can be overwhelming for a novice user.
We run an "eclipse theme" in this meetup to address this challenge, starting with an introductory session on Eclipse. We briefly examine the genesis and history of eclipse software, broader eclipse projects, touch base on OSGi philosophy around modular software. Then we go on to illustrate the core Eclipse IDE architectures, constituent components, and what is the latest and greatest on each.
In subsequent meetups, we pick-up one major component (such as Java Development Tools or Eclipse Compiler for Java etc.) and deep dive to understand how these components integrate with the IDE and provide value to the user, thereby enhancing developer productivity tremendously. Speaker bio

Niall Horgan is an experienced Software Development Manager. He has worked with IBM for the last 13 years managing development teams based in Ireland, Canada and India labs. Prior to joining IBM Niall worked with a variety of companies across various sectors including Motorola, British Telecom, Sun Microsystems and J.P. Morgan as a Java developer, project manager and development manager.

Gireesh Punathil is an IBM master inventor and Senior Technical Staff Member part of IBM Runtimes team that develops and supports Java, Node.js and Eclipse SDK among other things. He is an Eclipse committer and Node.js TSC member. In 20 years of his career, he has been porting, developing and debugging web servers, virtual machines, compilers and cloud platform frameworks. His expertise is in problem isolation and determination of large and complex software modules. He has spoken at several Node.js, Java and Eclipse conferences and has authored a book on Node.js enterprise application development.
