Java on IBM Z: Evolving for the Future of Enterprise Workloads

Details

Abstract:
Java remains a cornerstone for enterprise workloads on IBM Z, driving mission-critical applications with exceptional reliability, scalability, and performance. In this session, we’ll explore how Java continues to evolve on IBM Z—especially with the introduction of the latest IBM z17 system—to meet the demands of modern, cloud-native workloads and accelerate application modernization. We’ll begin with a look at current Java adoption trends on the platform, followed by a deep dive into the performance metrics that matter most to our customers: startup time, response latency, and throughput. You’ll learn how innovations in the JVM and hardware-level enhancements in IBM Z are helping us push the boundaries of what’s possible.Join us to discover how Java on IBM Z is not only keeping pace with modern application demands but also setting new standards for performance, security, and integration in hybrid cloud environments.

Speaker Bio:
Joran Siu is the Java Runtimes Architect for IBM Z, where he drives cutting-edge innovation in enterprise computing. He leads the development of the IBM Semeru Runtimes for z/OS and Linux on IBM Z, bringing modern Java performance to mission-critical systems. With deep expertise in compilers and runtime optimizations, Joran has played a pivotal role in expanding the ecosystem of enterprise runtimes—previously, he also led the successful port of Node.js to IBM platforms. His work bridges the gap between open-source technologies and enterprise-grade reliability, helping shape the future of software development on IBM Z.

Rahil Shah is a JIT Compiler Developer at IBM Canada, where he leads a team focused on advancing Java performance on the IBM Z platform. With over a decade of experience in Java runtimes, Rahil specializes in leveraging IBM Z hardware features to optimize execution efficiency. He is an active contributor and committer to the Eclipse OpenJ9 project, driving innovation in compiler technology and runtime performance.
