AWS Serverless: Green IT and Event-Based Architecture
Details
Talk 1 - Event-Driven Architectures with AWS
Event-driven architectures (EDA) are very popular these days. They offer many advantages such as easy extensibility, decoupling of sender and receiver, and good scalability. However, in practice, there are many different ideas about what an EDA actually is and what matters in the design of such an architecture. In this presentation, we want to first shed light on what an EDA is and what questions need to be clarified when introducing such an architecture. We will then go on to discuss how to implement an EDA in an AWS environment. We will provide practical tips and point out typical pitfalls.
Speakers:
Frank Steimle is a Senior Consultant at Digital Frontiers. He focuses on agile software development in combination with Domain-Driven Design. He is particularly interested in Event Modeling, CQRS, Event Sourcing, and all types of event-driven architectures. Florian Pfleiderer works as a Senior Consultant at Digital Frontiers, focusing on agile software development. He advises his clients in the areas of architecture, microservices, and craftsmanship.
Talk 2 - Decarbonizing your Batch Jobs - Serverless edition
Green IT is gaining increasing importance, and as an industry, we must actively contribute to addressing climate change by ensuring that our software doesn't impose unnecessary environmental burdens. In this presentation, you get introduced to the concept of Green Software Development and we dive into the idea of Demand Shifting, specifically Time Shifting. It will be demonstrated how we can put this concept into practice. Through efficient scheduling, you can reduce the CO2 emissions of your (batch) jobs. We'll utilize AWS Serverless technologies such as Step Functions, EventBridge and Lambda, along with the open-source tool 'carbon-aware-sdk.' A key takeaway from this talk is that sustainability in IT isn't just an idea; it can be seamlessly integrated into our daily routines with minimal effort. Moreover, the methods I'll showcase are applicable to other cloud providers and environments as well.
Speaker:
Manuel Wessner (codecentric AG) All things cloud - Software developer with a heart for Open Source. His primary focus is currently on Serverless and all things related to the Cloud. Manuel is fluent in Java, Kotlin, and TypeScript, and he's a big advocate for Clean Code and Refactoring. When he's not promoting Green Software Development practices, he is sometimes allowed to break things on purpose in the name of Chaos Engineering.
