4,000’ Hike! Franconia Ridge

Details

The Mount Lafayette and Franconia Ridge Trail Loop is a renowned and challenging 8.6-mile circuit nestled in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. This loop is celebrated for its breathtaking alpine vistas and is often hailed as one of the premier hikes in the Northeastern United States.

Trail Overview

Commencing at the Lafayette Place trailhead off Interstate 93, hikers typically ascend via the Falling Waters Trail. This path meanders through lush forests and past cascading waterfalls, leading to the summit of Little Haystack Mountain at 4,760 feet. From here, the route follows the Franconia Ridge Trail, a segment of the Appalachian Trail, traversing the exposed ridgeline over Mount Lincoln (5,089 ft) and culminating at Mount Lafayette (5,249 ft), the highest peak in the Franconia Range. The descent is made via the Greenleaf Trail, passing the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Greenleaf Hut, and reconnecting with the Old Bridle Path to complete the loop.

Highlights
• Alpine Scenery: Approximately 2.5 miles of the trail lie above the treeline, offering uninterrupted 360-degree views of the White Mountains and the Pemigewasset Wilderness.
• Waterfalls: The Falling Waters Trail features several picturesque waterfalls, including the notable Cloudland Falls.
• Wildlife and Flora: The trail traverses diverse ecosystems, from dense hardwood forests to alpine tundra, providing opportunities to observe a variety of wildlife and plant species.

Difficulty and Preparation

Rated as challenging, the loop involves a cumulative elevation gain of approximately 3,900 feet. Hikers should be prepared for steep ascents, rocky terrain, and rapidly changing weather conditions, especially along the exposed ridge. Proper gear, including layers, sturdy footwear, and ample water, is essential. Given the trail’s popularity, starting early is recommended to avoid crowds and to ensure adequate time for completion.

Access and Amenities

The trailhead is located within Franconia Notch State Park, which offers parking facilities and restrooms. The Greenleaf Hut, situated along the descent, provides a rest stop and, during operating seasons, offers lodging and meals for hikers.
