Monthly Online Accent Modification Class: Mastering “R-Colored” Vowels in American English

Welcome! I’m Darren Packard, a nationally accredited Speech-Language Pathologist based in Portland, Oregon. For over 24 years, I’ve specialized in helping non-native English speakers improve their American English pronunciation and professional communication skills.

This free monthly online class is a great opportunity to boost your clarity, confidence, and communication skills—whether for presentations, interviews, or everyday conversation.

This Month’s Focus: R-Colored Vowel Sounds
Did you know that one of the most difficult categories of sounds in American English is the “r-colored” vowels (also called r-influenced vowels)? These are vowel sounds followed by the /r/ sound in the same syllable, like in “bird,” “start,” or “ear.”

Almost all non-native English speakers struggle with these sounds—even those who learned British English, where these sounds are often pronounced differently.

In this session, we’ll:
Break down how these sounds are spelled and pronounced
Learn what your lips, tongue, and mouth need to do to produce them accurately
Practice in words, phrases, and full sentences
Share practical strategies for self-practice

You’ll also receive downloadable practice materials to keep improving at home, and I’ll offer as much individualized feedback as time allows during class.
