How to Use American English Melody and Intonation Sentences

This Month’s Focus: American English Intonation in Sentences

In this session, we’ll focus on intonation (melody) within sentences — one of the most important and most overlooked aspects of American English pronunciation.
Even advanced English speakers often struggle with sentence-level stress and pitch. When intonation is off, you may unintentionally sound:

• uncertain
• overly abrupt
• overly emphatic
• or as if you’re asking a question

In this class, I’ll teach you three essential aspects of sentence melody in American English:

Which Words to Stress in a Sentence
You’ll learn the rules for deciding which words should be emphasized — and how stressing the wrong word can completely change your meaning.

How to Use Pitch or Tone in a Sentence
We’ll work on rising and falling pitch patterns so you sound confident, clear, and natural — especially when making statements.

How to Link Words for Natural Flow
American English connects words together smoothly. You’ll learn how to link words in sentences so your speech flows naturally instead of sounding choppy or overly careful.

We’ll begin with simple statements and gradually work up to longer, more natural-sounding sentences.

You’ll learn:

• Clear rules for sentence stress and pitch
• How to avoid sounding uncertain or unintentionally rude
• How American English melody differs from other languages
• How to hear and correct your own intonation patterns
• Practical self-practice strategies you can use at home

As always, I’ll listen carefully and provide individualized feedback so you know exactly what to adjust and how to improve.

You’ll also receive downloadable practice materials to support continued improvement, and I’ll offer as much individualized feedback as time allows during class.

• Camera required: Please have your camera on to participate.
• Arrive on time: The class begins promptly at 6:00 PM. The Zoom room will close at 6:05 PM sharp. You may join up to 15 minutes early—I’ll be there.
• Professional classroom etiquette: Please remain seated and avoid distractions (no moving around, joining while traveling, etc.), so everyone can focus on learning.
