How to Pronounce American English Mid (Central) Vowel Sounds

This Month’s Focus: Mid (Central) Vowel Sounds in American English
In English, vowel sounds are made in different parts of the mouth — the front, middle, and back. In this session, we’ll focus on the mid (central) vowels, which are produced with the tongue positioned in the middle of your mouth.

These are very common sounds, and they are often difficult for learners of American English because small differences in tongue position and mouth opening can completely change the sound of a word.

In this class, I’ll show you how to hear and produce the mid (central) vowel sounds more clearly. We’ll talk about how these sounds appear in spelling, what your mouth, lips, and tongue need to do to produce them correctly, and how to recognize when two similar vowels are actually different sounds.

Who this class is for
This class is designed for non-native English speakers who want clearer, more natural-sounding American English pronunciation.

It is especially helpful for professionals who use English at work, students preparing for presentations or interviews, and anyone who wants to improve their everyday communication.

No prior training in pronunciation is required—just a willingness to listen, practice, and participate.

During the session, we’ll:
• Learn how the mid (central) vowels are produced in American English
• Practice hearing the differences between similar vowel sounds
• Work on correct mouth opening, tongue placement, and lip position
• Practice the sounds in words and short phrases
• Learn practical strategies for improving your pronunciation through self-practice

These sounds appear constantly in everyday English, so improving them can make a significant difference in how clear and natural your speech sounds.

You’ll also receive downloadable practice materials, and I’ll offer individualized feedback as time allows so you know exactly what to adjust and how to improve.

• Arrive on time: The class begins promptly at 6:00 PM. The Zoom room will close at 6:05 PM sharp. You may join up to 15 minutes early—I’ll be there.
