Hobbies & Hangups: What’s Stopping You From Creating?
When the world feels heavy and so much is outside our control, creativity can be a quiet act of resistance, a way to come back to ourselves.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. As a kid, I was always making something: pom pom animals, homemade dollhouse furniture, spin art (remember spin art?!). There was something so alive about that, the mess, the focus, the little thrill of finishing something with your own hands.
Somewhere along the way, that faded. Now I bookmark craft reels on Facebook and... never open them again. I have an entire craft room waiting for me, full of possibility, full of potential. Just waiting.
The funny thing is, I do create when there’s a purpose. I made a felt crown for a two-year-old I adore. I took a sewing class and made my sister an apron. Give me someone to make something for, and I show up. But for myself? Netflix wins almost every time. It’s easier. It asks nothing of me.
So I’m sitting with a question, and I’d love to know if it resonates with you:
What gets in the way of doing something you know you’d enjoy?
That’s exactly the kind of question I love exploring together, honestly, curiously, without judgment. That’s at the heart of what Authentic Relating is about: real conversations, a space to feel genuinely seen and heard, and the unexpected warmth of connecting with people you might not have met otherwise.
Come explore it with me.

What is Authentic Relating?
1, Authentic Relating is a set of practices and games that help people connect more honestly, deeply, and meaningfully with themselves and others. Instead of staying on the surface, you'll learn skills like listening, curiosity, self-awareness, and genuine communication. The goal isn't to be perfect—it's to be real.
2. Do I have to share personal or vulnerable things? No. You are always encouraged to honor your own boundaries and share only what feels right for you. Authentic Relating is about increasing awareness and choice, not pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone. Many people start by simply observing, listening, and sharing small truths.
3. What if I'm shy, introverted, or awkward in groups? You're not alone. Many people who are drawn to Authentic Relating consider themselves shy, introverted, or socially anxious. The practices are designed to create a supportive environment where you can participate at your own pace. There is no pressure to perform, be outgoing, or "do it right."
4. Is Authentic Relating like therapy?Authentic Relating is not therapy, although it can sometimes feel meaningful and transformative. The focus is on practicing real-time connection, communication, and self-awareness with others. While personal insights often arise, the emphasis is on relational skills and present-moment experience rather than treating mental health concerns.
5. What happens at an Authentic Relating Game Night?A typical Authentic Relating event includes simple interactive exercises, partner conversations, small-group activities, and playful connection games. Some activities are lighthearted and fun, while others invite deeper reflection and curiosity. No experience is needed—just a willingness to show up as yourself and connect with others in a welcoming, judgment-free environment.
