Gilsland Farm Audobon hike and Lunch
Details
The Gilsland Farm Audubon Center is situated along the Presumpscot River estuary just five minutes from Portland. We will hike the two mile loop trail watching for Egrets, Ibis, Turkeys and Bluebirds. Bring binoculars.
Download the 'Merlin' bird ID app from Cornell U. if you do not have it on your smartphone.
Gilsland Farm Audubon Center is a 65-acre sanctuary with more than two miles of trails winding along a pond and through forest, meadow, orchard, and salt marsh. During the summer there is an abundance of song birds and waterfowl. They maintain a series of bird feeders on either side of the building. There are turkeys in the area and we have seen Bluebirds, Woodpeckers, Waxwings, Finches, Orioles and many others. In the marsh you might see Egrets and Glossy Ibis (in the spring). This will be a casual hike. The trails are mostly wide and in the open with some wooded sections. It's a nice two mile loop.
NOTE: The Audubon Center is a nature preserve. They do not allow any dogs, either on or off leash. Thank you for understanding.
Bring a snack or lunch and we will relax afterwards on picnic tables near the bird feeders. There is always a colorful show going on there.
