Overview

Boost your improv with dynamic changes, pre-set motifs, and signal-driven groove in a friendly, instrument-friendly workshop for players of all levels.

Details

Our usual Monday improv jams involve creating simple improvised melodies and lyrics against a set of simple, static changes we choose at the beginning of the song.

This is a hands-on, instrument-friendly workshop. We will be improvising live music, together, alongside some discussions of tools and techniques for most active-listening, demanding improvisation sessions.

At this workshop, we'll explore how to move beyond simple limits, and create more dynamic improvised songs.

We'll explore pre-setting change signals, change leaders, "passing the buck", freeform, and other styles of deciding how you want your dynamic changes to work BEFORE you start playing.

We'll explore setting motif and theme ahead of time, as well as choosing arrangement ahead of time, and how those impact how a song develops.

We'll discuss "meeting back at the one", or "the Head", and using signals (both hand and musical) to re-stabilize a song that has lost their groove.

Throughout all this, we'll be playing together, exploring the techniques discussed in a practical improvised setting, and attempting to become more comfortable when things aren't as pre-set ahead of time.

Come out and make it up as we go along!
