Southwest Portland Rectangular Adventure
Details
Think you know Southwest Portland? Think again. Beneath all those windy streets and confusing intersections, there’s actually a sneaky network of trails zig-zagging through ravines, parks, and neighborhoods — and we’re going to connect the dots.
We’ll form a rough rectangle (because circles are overrated), starting north on Southwest Trail #7, cutting east on #4, then south on #6, and finally west on #5 until we reconnect with #7 to close the loop - er, rectangle.
Expect a mix of quiet city streets, where you’ll doubt they ever lead anywhere, plus a few “shortcuts” that prove otherwise.
Along the way, we’ll meander through Multnomah Village, Marshall Park, Maricara Nature Park, and Woods Memorial Nature Park — basically Portland’s greatest hits of “wait, I didn’t know this was here.” We’ll even cross I‑5 twice (safely, via overpasses, not parkour).
The stats: 6.5 miles, about 700 feet of elevation gain, 2½ hours of adventure give or take, depending on how easily we’re distracted by plants and viewpoints.
Meet at SW Carson & SW 42nd — plenty of street parking and no excuses. Bring water, sun protection (wishful thinking?) or raingear, and your best “look, a hidden trail!” enthusiasm. This is a rain or shine event, so think positive thoughts for glorious weather.
