What we’re about

Portland Classics Society is a place for lovers of ancient literature, philosophy, history and languages to come together and discuss timeless texts which have shaped Western civilization. In our reading groups, we value questions over answers and the desire to learn over the desire to know. We seek to develop a profound and shared understanding of a text and to examine its relevance both to its own time and ours.

We hold three "seasons" of reading groups, each of which lasts for approximately 10-12 weeks. This year, we plan to offer Homer's Iliad in Fall, Homer's Odyssey in Winter, and Vergil's Aeneid in Spring.

Hi members! This group is very new and I just wanted to mention a few things:

1. The Iliad reading group for fall has a time of Tuesday evenings, but if that doesn't work for some who would like to participate, I am somewhat flexible and was going to make a poll towards the end of August. I am also figuring out the venue still (whether I'll host or do it at a public space) but I'll have that figured out by the end of the month as well!

2. I am hoping to offer a few other "short groups" on Greek Philosophy throughout the year. The first one I'm thinking of is Plato's Apology, which I think would take a few weeks to read/discuss. This will most likely take place on Sunday mid-morning for a couple of hours for a few weeks in October, but please PM me if you are interested and we can figure it out.

3. If you'd like to be on our email list, visit PortlandClassicsSociety.com and fill out the contact form!

4. Also, feel free to PM me or email @ portlandclassicssociety@gmail.com if you have requests for a specific text you'd like a group on! Right now, I am trying to keep the scope pretty narrow to Ancient Greek stuff (would like to open it up as we move forward but for now, there is so much amazing literature & philosophy just limiting it to Ancient Greece!)

Looking forward to exploring things with you!
