ESPERANTO AND THE FUTURE

Two important “Build Earth Community” events

Sunday, September 18 and Monday, September 19, 2016

In Portland, Oregon.

All people in favor of a just and

sustainable global future are invited!

Dear Friends,

Please make every effort to attend two important events here in Portland, Oregon on the 18th and 19th of September related to the Esperanto language and its global network, education, Global Golden Rule ethics, and a mechanism for breaking out of political gridlock into forward motion on building a just and sustainable Earth Community.

Please RSVP, since seating is limited.

BACKGROUND

Humanity needs ways to get beyond its current gridlocked, alpha-male-dominated systems of self-government and to move toward a holistic, just, and sustainable Earth Community. Esperanto is a language specifically aimed at fostering global person-to-person friendship and cooperation, thus directly benefitting the persons involved and undercutting official gridlock. Despite its neglect by economic elites and most government, it has evolved over almost 130 years from one humble individual and 917 root words to a global friendship and cooperation network of two to three million users and a fully adequate and expressive vocabulary. Among other benefits, Esperanto offers opportunities for:

· the expanded education of children, youth, young adults, and adults in relation to positive communication and building positive community and cooperation among people with different racial, ethnic, religious, national, and linguistic backgrounds;

· professional, travel, and specific interest contacts for young adults and adults;

· your own personal self-globalization into a holistic spiritual and decision-making framework of Earth Community and the Global Golden Rule, and for your own globally synchronized and coordinated local actions for a sustainable future for everyone.

In very recent years, thanks to the Internet, interest in and use of Esperanto has quietly begun to surge, making it important for larger numbers of thoughtful and active people to become better acquainted with it.

People who attend these two events might be startled to learn, for instance, that Esperanto, far from having "died out," is now one of the top 30 languages of Wikipedia, and that since Duolingo.com began its free Esperanto course in 2015, over 500,000 people have signed up to learn it.

The question to be explored at these two local events will be “Esperanto and the Future” — how to add to, and how to gain the most benefits from, the Esperanto language and its global friendship and cooperation network.

THE EVENT

Monday, September 19, Seminar on "Esperanto and the Future," at the Esperanto, Ethics, and Earth Community Center.

We will meet at 9:00 a.m. at the new Esperanto, Ethics, and Earth Community Center at 4506 SE Belmont, Suite B-2. John Dale, Center director, will explain the Center’s resources and lines of future effort and exploration. Dr. Raola will then guide us through the landscape of the major groups, institutions, individuals, and aims of the global Esperanto movement. He will focus on Esperanto’s alignment with the goals of the International Community's Global Agenda 2030, on how to use the Esperanto global network for practical benefits, and on how we might try to publicize and grow the Esperanto movement here in Oregon.

The Center is located at 4506 SE Belmont, which is the Old Belmont Square Building, in basement studio B-2. There are entrances on both Belmont and off of 45th Avenue. There is a building parking lot off of 45th Avenue, and parking is also available on nearby streets. The Center is also served by public transportation on Trimet Bus #15.

This event will start at 9:00 a.m. and will run to however late the participants wish. If necessary, we may break for lunch at nearby eateries.

As part of, or possibly after, the seminar, there may be another showing of Tra la Florida Markolo for those who could not attend previously.

In any case, the event will end on a humorous note with a showing of Esperanto’s latest spoof horror film, namely, The Monster of Phantom Lake (voiced-over in Esperanto, subtitled in English).

During both events, we will be emphasizing, again, that Esperanto has what we believe are still largely untapped potential benefits for use in

· diversity education and foreign language study, including in homeschooling situations;

· liberal religious education for a just and sustainable future;

· building positive attitudes among people of differing racial, ethnic, religious, national, and linguistic backgrounds, and

· strengthening the spirit of working with others around the world to follow the Golden Global Rule, to face our global problems in a systematic way (Global Agenda 2030), and to work within ourselves and with others to “Build Earth Community.”

We invite you to think about how you could both benefit from, and add to the benefits of, the Esperanto language and its network, as reflected in our efforts to promote it here in Oregon.

PLEASE RSVP REGARDING BOTH EVENTS as seating at both events is limited. RSVP to Esperanto_Oregono@yahoo.com or to John Dale at 503-380-0887.
