What we’re about

05.15.2025 Announcement from Host: As I shared previously with many of this group's regular members, next Friday I will be starting a new full time in-office position. As a result, I must pause this group's activities until my new schedule is settled and I can host calls again. I appreciate everyone's understanding and look forward to future events. This Friday, May 16th (US Time), May 17th (Japan Time) will be the last meeting for at least a few weeks. Please remain members of the group to receive notifications whenever future calls are scheduled. After over two and a half years, I have really grown to appreciate everyone who joins this group, even if only for 1 or 2 calls. Your contributions are what make our time together meaningful. Thank you.

This is an online Meetup Group based in the Pacific Coast Time Zone. The purpose is for those who have at least an elementary level of Japanese or English to practice their listening and speaking skills. If you are an absolute beginner in Japanese, you may find participating in conversations to be difficult.

English learners also, are encouraged to have a basic foundation to better participate in the conversations. The class will be split into three sections. New members should introduce themselves: name, where do you live, what is your profession, how long have you been studying Japanese or English, and why do you want to learn Japanese or English? Try to introduce yourself in the language you want to learn in order to practice. The second part will be ~25 minutes of Japanese speaking only, followed by ~25 minutes of English speaking only. It is expected that proficient language speakers be patient and help those in the learning process.

We ask all members to please be respectful and avoid divisive or offensive topics that would detract from the enjoyment of the conversation. Some of these topics include, but are not limited to: religion, politics, or sexual topics others may find offensive. Disparaging, derogatory, or hateful speech will absolutely not be tolerated and may result in prohibition of joining future sessions.

Every class we will ask what you did over the weekend or what events took place in your life prior to joining the next call. This will lead to organic conversation. Role-playing topics will be prepared in advance if the conversation goes quiet. Role-play will typically involve two people to practice an exchange, for example, buying groceries, purchasing movie tickets, arranging for a hotel stay, or booking travel with an airline company.
