Wild Steelhead in the Upper Salmonberry Conservation Area

Details

The Salmonberry River is famous for its run of wild steelhead, some of which power up the 14 foot North Fork Salmonberry Falls to spawn higher in the river. The 3,097 acres of this Conservation Area (http://forestlegacy.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/July2013_UpperSalmonberry_22x34_o.pdf) offer some very beautiful riverside views and the opportunity to view spawning fish. Join us as we explore and photograph this area with a short (2 mile) walk along an old logging road. This is not a long hike, so if mileage and exercise are your goals, you may be interested in something else. However, there are a couple of points in the hike that include crossing small streams and ravines. If you have any concerns or questions about this, message me.

This early May opportunity should allow us a chance to view steelhead jumping up the falls:

Attendees can meet (and carpool) at:

• 8:00 am at the Sunset Transit Center (10470 SW Barnes Rd, Beaverton--look for group at the east end of park and ride),

or

• 8:45 am at the intersection of Salmonberry Rd and HWY 26 (between mileposts 31 & 32).

We will need two high-clearance vehicles in addition to mine. If you are willing to drive yours, please indicate so - you will be given priority to attend.

As always, proper shoes and clothes (waterproof and warm), a hat, water, and food are musts! To get down to the falls (pictured below), you may want a hiking stick and gloves. This portion is steep and rugged - if you are unsure about this section, lets talk beforehand to ensure it's a good fit for you.

When you RSVP, please indicate where you will be meeting the group! If you are not driving, please plan to contribute some money for gas.
