About us
The PUPs Meetup Group opens its participants to an urban environment in a variety of ways via the practice of walking. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to wander our city and learn to feel more engaged with the space and it’s inhabitants? Are there neighborhoods you’ve never explored, but piqued your curiosity? Could you rediscover something fascinating in places you’ve visited previously?
Join us as we explore the Portland/Vancouver metro area's treasures through event activities such as downtown sauntering, photo walks, art gallery touring, street art strolling, destination walks, district meandering, exploring parks, and co-sponsored EverWalk events. This group is ideally suited for long-time residents and newcomers.
As pedestrians, we will move through a designated area of the city with a time range limit and structure guided by an itinerary or theme. The pace is intended to allow for meaningful observations and interaction with the city and group participants, including those with assisted mobility.
Members must have a front-facing, clear photo of themselves to join the group. Walk leaders are volunteers, not professionals. By participating in an event, you and your guests accept full responsibility for your own well-being/health/safety/COVID protocol and completely absolve the event hosts, the Portland Urban Pedestrians group, and Meetup of any responsibility for injury that may occur during the walk.
This group is also on the Heylo app by the same name where events are cross-listed at: Heylo Link

Fancy Pants Hike: Round Three. Still Selling Out. Still Worth It.
Stevens Pavilion Picnic Shelter, 3119 Southwest Fairview Boulevard, Portland, OR, USYes, we've done this twice. Yes, it sold out both times. Yes, we all heard you about the waitlist. Let's bring on the third showing.
Portland's parks did not come peacefully into existence. Behind every beloved green space in this city is a story of dastardly villains, civic heroes, backroom scheming, and improbable triumph. We're pulling back the curtain on all of it.
And this is not your average walk-and-talk. Before the hike, I go deep - researching the history, hunting down old photographs, and building a fully interactive visual experience you can pull up on your phone as we walk. We stop at a spot, you open your screen, and suddenly you're looking at exactly what that place looked like when the drama was unfolding. Old photos, maps, graphics - all of it, right in your hand, right where history actually happened. It's like a time machine, except with better shoes.
And then there's Hoyt Arboretum itself. Those trails? Not accidental. Every curve, every clearing, every sudden breathtaking vista was deliberately engineered to manipulate your emotions - techniques perfected by legendary landscape architects, hiding in plain sight for over a century.
We're exposing the whole beautiful conspiracy. On foot. In 2.5 hours. With excellent company.
Spots are limited and the waitlist is very, very real. You know what to do.

Standing Firm Against the Hoyt Arboretum Magnolia Offensive
Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center, 4000 SW Fairview Blvd., Portland, OR, USThe Hoyt Arboretum magnolias have returned, smug as ever, mounting yet another manipulative springtime disinformation campaign aimed at prying Portlanders out of our mossy winter hollows with color, fragrance, and false hope.
We will not be swayed by these floral hucksters.
This will be an educational walk through Hoyt Arboretum’s Magnolia Trail at peak bloom, where I’ll be sharing the history of magnolias, the different varieties we’ll encounter, and how Hoyt Arboretum built this dazzling annual display.
Please bring your fully charged mobile phone. It will be your passport for an interactive magnolia guide that will help us study the full scope of this floral manipulation.
We will not simply stand there admiring the propaganda. We will study it, understand it, and arm ourselves with the knowledge needed to resist it.
Come test your resolve, learn the backstory behind these outrageously persuasive blossoms, and prove that no amount of floral theater can shake your deeply rooted Portland winter pessimism.
