Explore Bachelor Slough by kayak

Details

The outing: Bachelor Slough is part of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge and is a different way to kayak to the Columbia from McCuddy's (Ridgefield) Maria. A high tide will hopefully assist us in paddling over a shallow spot partway out. We'll pull in for lunch on a sandy beach and then explore the area where the Slough joins the Columbia before returning to our put-in. We'll likely see Great Blue Herons, egrets, osprey and perhaps a bald eagle.
The leader needs: Your full name, email address and cell number. If you bring a guest, include their full name and info, as well as the name and number of an emergency contact. This is required by Sierra Club outings policy.
Meeting time/place/directions: 10 a.m., Aug. 14/Thurs, McCuddy's (Ridgefield) Marina. Follow I-5 N to exit 14, turn L onto Pioneer St. Note: Pioneer St is under construction, so drive carefully. You'll also encounter 5 roundabouts, go straight ahead at each one to downtown Ridgefield. At Pioneer & Main St, go straight ahead and turn L into the marina. Head-in parking on the gravel next to the fence is free. If you park on the pavement, purchase a parking pass at the restroom machine ($8/day).
Kayak rentals: If you plan to rent, Google Alder Creek.com and click on Ridgefield rentals. Single kayak rental runs $35/2 hrs, $45 for a double. Note that we may be out for up to 3 hrs. Rentals include paddle and pfd (life jacket). If you paddle your own kayak, don't forget your pfd and paddle.
Waiver: Sierra Club outings policy requires all participants to sign a waiver of liability before getting on the water. We do this at the meeting location.
Outings donation: Sierra Club members $2, non-members $4. Please have correct amount. We accept checks (made to Sierra Club), but cannot accept Venmo, debit or credit cards at the meeting location.
Pets: This outing is not suitable for pets.
Weather: Outing may be cancelled if weather is severe (high winds, heavy rain, thunderstorm/lightning). Check Meetup on Aug. 12 for a weather update and reminder.
What to wear and bring: Clothing to suit weather. NO COTTON! Polyester, nylon and polypropylene are far superior. Wide-brim hat: protect your head. Sunscreen. Footwear: River sandals or water shoes. Sunglasses: attach a croakie so you won't lose them.
Lunch/water: Bring your lunch and a FULL water bottle.
Questions: Email the outing leader -- tripsguy@aol.com
