Hackney - Alternative Currencies

As blogs take readers away from newspapers and YouTube threatens to replace traditional TV, it would seem that technology is shifting the base of power from the few to the many. Are alternative currencies proof that the same thing is happening in currency? Is creating a currency just as easy as creating a Youtube channel?

Duncan McCann (http://goo.gl/sKWPaz), of the New Economics Foundation (http://goo.gl/sKWPaz), will do an overview of the different type of alternative currencies. Laura Jenner will present the Spice Time Credits (http://goo.gl/uN2JqQ) project which aims to open up economic opportunities to those outside the current system. It works on a simple hour-for-hour basis: for every hour you give to the Hackney community you earn one Time Credit, which you can then spend on an activity of your choice. We will conclude with a Q&A and debate.
