Robert A Long, a Midwest-based wealthy entrepreneur, was looking for a Pacific Northwest location for expansion into the lumber business. The planned community of Longview was almost an afterthought to the initial establishment of the enormous timber processing business. Today, we can see the results of Long's vision and philanthropy in the city's street grid and public buildings in the civic center. We'll start at the Monticello Hotel facing the public square and then explore the downtown commercial buildings.
