Spinning magnetic hard drives are going to be around for the foreseeable future, but solid state drives offer a performance increase that's too impressive to ignore. Unfortunately for existing storage solutions, Solid State Drives have very little in common with traditional rotating media. Blogger and SysAdmin Matt Simmons offers a deep dive into the underlying technology of the SSD, what factors impact its performance and longevity, and gives you valuable information to take back to work that will help with your decision-making regarding SSDs and your data needs. This talk was previously presented as part of a half-day training session at LOPSA-East, a regional IT conference, in early 2013.
Matt Simmons currently works as the Networking and Virtualization Administrator at the College of Computer and Information Science at Northeastern University in Boston. He joined LOPSA in 2009, attended New Jersey LOPSA chapter meetings until he founded the New York City chapter, then later formed the Columbus, Ohio chapter. He was the recipient of the 2011 Chuck Yerkes award for outstanding contributions to online forums, and served as the program chair of the Professional IT Community Conference in 2011. He was elected to the LOPSA Board of Directors in 2013.
