Like phoenix from the ashes the open source player from the Niederrhein area in Germany/NRW is back in the game and immediately the next host for the 5. PostgreSQL User Group NRW meetup in their new location next to the Borussia Park stadion in M'gladbach - which will be weird for me visiting just this once not for an away game. But - "hail Slonik" - I'd do even that for PostgreSQL :-) !

For the agenda we'll have three 30 min talks with lots of networking, drinks and Pizza.

Migrating from legacy or proprietary databases to PostgreSQL can be complex and often overwhelming. This talk highlights key challenges, strategies, and introduces credativ-pg-migrator—a tool designed to automate and simplify the process to migrate various database to PostgreSQL. We will celebrate the launch of this open source tool during our PostgreSQL User Group NRW MeetUp.

Abstract:
Locks sind ein zentrales Mittel für die Isolation von nebenläufigen Transaktionen. Wie PostgreSQL diese implementiert und welche SQL-Statements zu welchen Locks führen, ist ein Frage die sich oft gestellt wird. Wir versuchen einen Überblick zu schaffen und bringen Licht in ein Thema, welches oft erst dann betrachtet wird, wenn es Probleme macht.

"Modern VACUUM"

Abstract:
Vor ein oder zwei Jahrzehnten war VACUUM in PostgreSQL noch ein einfaches Verfahren, das eine gesamte Tabelle eingelesen und dann nicht mehr sichtbare Zeilenversionen aus der Tabelle und ihren Indexen entfernt hat. Alle 200 Millionen Transaktionen wurde die Tabelle ein weiteres Mal durchlaufen, um alte Transaktionsnummer einzufrieren, damit der Transaktionszähler nicht überläuft.
Mit der Zeit wurde dieses augenscheinlich simple Verfahren dann optimiert. VACUUM weiß nun, welche Seiten besucht werden müssen, sowohl für Vacuum als auch für Freezing. Durchläufe können beschleunigt werden, indem Indexe und TOAST-Tabellen ausgelassen werden. Verschiedene Phasen können Parallelisierung nutzen. Autovacuum weiß nun, mit INSERT-only-Tabellen umzugehen. Notfall-Freeze-Läufe sind weit weniger furchterregend als früher.
In diesem Vortrag beleuchten wir diese modernen VACUUM-Features und zeigen, wie DBAs die bessere Performance nutzen können.
