About us
The goal of the Practical Philosophy Club is to create a community that discusses ideas that can be used practically in everyday life.
Our discussions help us develop the following:
Critical Thinking / Discernment - through our conversational exploration, we question our own beliefs, and hear perspectives that can help us develop new insights. This exploration can carry into our assumptions in everyday life and help us develop.
Communication - By sharing our thoughts, we are developing our communication ability, and learning how to share in a way that is understandable and accessible to people who may not have the same belief.
Community - By having our discussions focused on a specific topic each week, we are able to get to know each other beyond small talk. There’s also time before and after the meetup to dive deeper with the other attendees. 🙌
Most importantly, we are a group that values community and care for one another.
We meet each week in various places throughout the world. To learn more about our community, see our open events, or join one of our groups around the world, visit our website: https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/

*****🏛️ WHAT IS PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY?
This is a meetup (founded by a Canadian non-profit) that gathers mature, curious adults for a unique social opportunity to sustain a "Third Place" community, especially in a modern world ravaged by constant changes, technological disruptions (including AI), mental health crises, and feeling of loss of humanity. A way to "reset" our mental autopilot! Our motto is the "3C's" -- Critical Thinking, Communication, Community. Our biweekly meetups are based on the premise that philosophy can (and should) be accessible to everyone, not limited to academics, and not for profit.
We create friendly gatherings to discuss a "topic of the week", some voted in advance by members. We appreciate newcomers as much as old-timers who enjoyed prior discussions. We hope everyone leaves the meetup having learned something new or different, or picked up new ideas to practices for everyday life.
📓 HOW DOES IT WORK?
A weekly topic is announced, first in the Whatsapp group, along with some jump-off points to stimulate the conversations.
As groups get bigger than 7 or 8 attendees, or if one group prefers to speak in Spanish rather than English, we will break into subgroups. This helps to maintain a less overwhelming lecture setup and a more intimate flow of conversation.Structure
Each Practical Philosophy meetup follows a general timeline:- 19h - 19h15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the ‘official' start.
- 19h15 - 19h25 - Host/Facilitator introduces his personal journey, explains the spirit of Practical Philosophy, and opens up with the topic for the week.
- 19h25 - 20h50 - The (sub)groups are open to discussion. They can use the ‘jump-off’ questions as stimulants, or come up with their own questions to ponder about. Remember: A good philosopher does not have good answers, only good questions.
- 20h50 - 21h - Bring everyone back together to wrap up with few ideas shared around the topic of the week. Facilitator thanks everyone's active listening and participation, wrapping up with a group photo for those who want to be in it (the photo will be shared in the Whatsapp group)
- 21h - Official meetup is over, but still a great opportunity to socialize in a non-structured setting. Some of us may stick around to chat and to get to know each other better.
Cost
Practical Philosophy is FREE to attend. VOLUNTARY donations to cover the costs of running the meetups are always very appreciated. 🙏 We do ask that you order a drink (or dessert, or even dinner if desired!) from the menu.💗 WHAT DO FOLKS SAY ABOUT THE MEETUPS?
🗣 “I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” ~Ekam
🗣 “I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” ~Daniel🤓 FAQs
(1) What topic are we covering this week?
The topic for the week is shared every Sun/Mon in our Málaga chapter Whatsapp group, so don't forget to join in and stay up to date. We also add the topic of the week here on Meetup.com.(2) Must I read or prepare something prior?
No reading or preparation is needed. We try not to do philosopher name-dropping,😅 Think of the meetup as a "Third Place", in the spirit of Parisian philosophy cafés, just a bit less posh.🤭 We are curious about what YOU personally think about the topic, no judgment, even if it is far from mainstream or contrary to another member's opinions. We believe everyone can develop a curious mind and exercise critical thinking, because we can ALL be philosophers!(3) Any specific school of philosophy that this Meetup adheres to?
The goal of organizing this Third Place is to not have dogmatic discussions, but to flex our mental muscles with critical thinking and curiosity. We stay away from polarizing dogmas.(4) Attendees tend to be mostly men?
Surprisingly, NO! In recent months we have had excellent female-to-male participation ratio, of all ages, in few cases even the ladies were the majority! Modern philosophy is not discussed in dark basements or cigar-smoked rooms, but rather in quiet, bright cafés, in the woods, or on the beach. Being closer to Nature in fact activates our minds for healthy exchanges.(5) Can I come by myself, or do I have to bring a guest?
Come one, come all! Just bring your authentic self, which we value over wearing performative masks. This is a psychological safe meetup, where all viewpoints are appreciated.(6) What if I am running late?
Try to arrive no later than 19h15, so the flow of the conversation is not disrupted by each late comer. We appreciate it!(7) Do you meet in other locations?
For now, we meet in Málaga city center. Given that the Meetup is member organized, we encourage ideas and proposals for alternate locations (El Palo? Rincón de la Victoria?) and weeks (for now we only gather every other week, given current demand). For a list of other Practical Philosophy chapters, see our website.
