Practical philosophy club Stockholm 🇸🇪
Details
Dear Everyone
This week we will discuss the subject "Sex, attention & exposure" in our practical philosophy group. We will be mostly directed toward "Nudity & Desire for objectification " which will cover a rich area including : embodiment, the gaze, shame, desire, recognition, power, freedom, and commodification.
You may like to grab some ideas from figures like Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Michel Foucault, Martha Nussbaum, Laura Mulvey & Byung-Chul Han.
We will gather in Grillska Huset, start the discussion at 7pm but you may like to join a bit sooner to get ready for a good start.
Here are some questions that direct our 2 hour conversation.
Part I — What Is Nudity?
What is the difference between being naked and being nude?
Is nudity natural, cultural, or both?
Why does nudity provoke vulnerability, shame, freedom, or power?
Can nudity exist without sexuality?
Part II — The Gaze and Becoming an Object
What happens when we become aware that someone is looking at us?
Is being desired necessarily a form of objectification?
Can someone desire to be objectified?
Is there a difference between being admired and being reduced?
Part III — Sexual Attention and Power
When does sexual attention become intrusive?
Is an unsolicited sexual proposition always a violation?
Does intention matter more than reception?
How do power, gender, and social norms shape sexual attention?
Part IV — Desire, Consent, and Self-Objectification (20 min)
Can self-objectification be empowering?
Is choosing to display oneself freedom—or adaptation to social demand?
Is erotic visibility a form of agency or submission?
Can commodifying one’s attractiveness still be autonomy?
Part V — Modern Digital Life
Has social media changed the meaning of nudity?
Are we all becoming performers of ourselves?
Does visibility create freedom or surveillance?
Is intimacy becoming transactional?
Ending Reflection:
Do we fear objectification—or do we secretly seek it?
Waiting to see you.
Bests
